Hey guys, I got asked by a friend of mine if I knew anyone interested in hunting bears in Idaho. The hunt takes place in Riggins Idaho and is on Private land. I've never been on it but know that there are some Orchards on it and the pictures I've seen of the bears that come from there are awesome. You will see pleanty of good bear. bears are Spot and Stalk. there isn't any CRAZY hiking but some required. I think

I know Wilecoyote knows one of the guys that have hunted it and got a HUUUUGE bear. I need to get the pictures of that bear too.

I've added up all my baiting costs in a year and have about decided this is the way that I'm going to go from now on. If a couple of you decide to go this year I might come up for fun.

At any rate, I'll get some picturees up and whatever but I'm just dropping the infomation in case someone didn't get their tag they wanted to draw on and still wants to go on a Kick A' bear hunt.

don't know where riggins is, so, guess I'll be going back to the usual place next month. NE of kamiah. think the camp is near beaver creek saddle? anyways, thats not a bad price for a bear hunt if all is included. but found one for next year for 1275 plus tags and license. have to at least check it out at that price.

Your not promoting ol' paul are you??

Moosie, check out www.elkcityadventures.com. prices this year were $1275 plus tags and license. don't know what the resident cost for the license is, but the out of state was $141.50. plus the tags at $31.75. you can drive right into the base camp. you hunt at around 6000 feet. they take everyone out on 4 wheelers. during the morning, the lady told me that they are about 45 minutes away from a hot springs resort type thing. so you can drive there if you want in the AM. second bear costs an additional $200 if you want to take 2. they allow a max of 6 hunters per week in the camp. and they run them on a date to date schedule. meaning they may go from the 1st thru the 7th. not a sunday thru saturday. said there is fishing in the area if you want to do that in the AM also. have showers. alcohol is OK after the hunt. and they bait with meat, fruit, candy, grease, dogfood, and cookie dough. guess thats for the fat hunters.:D

Gato.. No, Not Paul, But Paul was the one that Shot that Huge ol bear on the property. It's the same guys that have the deal in the Owyhees Wayne and Jason but to the best of my knowlege Paul isn't a part of the bear....

Wile, didn't you see his bear ?

Thanks for all the info !!!

Wile, didn't you see his bear ?

Nope, I didn't or haven't seen it yet. If it is Oz, I would still like to see that big old moose he shot in AK a few years back. Tell your partner to send me some pics to refresh my memory.....

Well they were all suppose to be partners and paul always talked about wanting to run bears up there, who knows, haha

HUMMM/.. really ? ;)

I was asked to make it a point that Paul is in Alaska for the whole month of September so he is definitely not part of it Gato :D :p

Here is some additional info/specs sent to me :

The trip is $2500 for 4 days of hunting or $2000 for 3 days. It's all inclusive except taxes, tags and licenses. You bring your choice of weapon, skivvies, and toothbrush…the rest will be provided. We have comfortable beds, the best food you'll ever eat on a camp, transportation while on the hunt, and a one on one guide. This property is the most unique property in all of Idaho. Because of the hundreds of acres of natural plumb, cherry, and apple orchards there are many, many bears that come out of the high country for a time to gorge on the fruit. It is not uncommon for hunters to see up to 8 - 10 bears a day. We have several tree stands set on the property so you can sit and shoot or if you prefer we can spot and stalk, which is always a kick. We know this isn't the cheapest hunt for bears in Idaho, we never intended it to be. We offer the best camp in the area, with the opportunity to see more bears on a daily basis than any other place in Idaho for a reasonable fee. It will be worth the money for the overall experience. If you're looking for a cheap hunt, this isn't your hunt. If you're looking for a great experience with friends, seeing many animals, and eating well…you need to get a hold of us. Here are two of the eight bears taken last year. The black bear is just at 450 pounds while the brown one was just over 375. Not all bears are this size, but the chances are good to see one or two on your trip of this caliber. The first picture shows the hunters from the second week of the hunt last year. This was a three generation harvest for the young girl, her dad, and grandpa. The hunter second from the left is Mike McMichael, the owner of Power Belt Bullets and the hunter to the far right is the owner of BPI (Blackpowder Products, Inc). Please contact me if you're interested and I'll let you know what weekends are available.

Do you have a contact? Sounds like a fun hunt. I'm not much for baiting but spot and stalk in that setting could be great fun for some out of town family.

Coop, PM me and I'll get you the info if you're interested.

I'm heading out today. I'm running up there for the Evening just to take a look. I will give you my opinion after seeing it. I'm going to bring O-town with me. He get's out of church at 2PM. He thinks he is going to stay awake on the trip home but I'm betting against it. See you boyz tomorrow !!

Well, I made the Whirlwind trip. It takes bout 3 hours from my house to get there. I left at 2:30 and got to their camp at 5:30. One of the funniest parts was taking my Oldest kid Oscar III, He is 11. He made the 3 hour trip go by quickly. The beginning of the trip was all about going over road signs and road markings. He loves learning and it's always easier to talk and teach when it's one on one. Usually there is my wife and all 4 boys in the car and it's hard to talk let alone teach anything :) I explained mile markers and that exit #'s matched up with them. We also stopped before the trip and got McD's and snacks for the trip. Some jerky, Potato chips, drinks, gum, etc. I like road trips :)

Anyway, pulling into camp at 5:30 some of the other guys had their boys in camp. Little O' knew one of them. I heard the guys were up there looking for a bear that had been shot and hour ago so I unloaded the 4-wheeler to go up and help look. My boy stayed at camp with the other boys and shot 22's, made a bow out of a tree limb, and exploring forts as well as anything else a kid can do at that age.

When we got to the area that the guys were at we met Mike McMicheals on the road. Anyone that shoots Black powder bullets probably know his name ? He owns Power Belt Bullets. He lives jsut down the road from me and is a Top knotch dude. We then got the run down and decided to see if the bear crossed in the nearby canyon. I was driving up a guy to the top of it on a road when we came around a corner and right in the middle of the road was a bear. I wanted a picture so I jumped off the 4 wheeler, took of my backpack and dug through it. I had the camera all wrapped up in a jacket. I finally got ot the camera as the bear started to take off. I snapped 3 pictures of it as it bailed over the side of the road into the thick brush. It wasn't a big one but it's always cool to see bear. I wasn't sure if I'd see another one.

We then drove to the top, I dropped him off and I drove back around to glass a little. I ended up talking to some other guys in the party up there. About 1.5 hours had passed I think so I went back to camp to grab my boy and bring him up. As we were going back up we met my buddy Jason Oswald on a 4-wheeler coming out of the hills. We talked a little and then drove to a point where he showed the layout of the ground.

What I liked about the area is there were at least 5 different type of fruit trees and they were ALL OVER. As we drove by we'd pick some and eat them. You can tell that the early settlers had trees and the bears and other animals must have ate the fruit and then pooped out the seed all up the canyons.

We headed back down to the Skinning shed. They had 7 hunters in camp with 4-5 bear down. It was only the 2nd day of the season and they were piling them up like wood. I wanted my boy to see a live bear so Jason told me to drive up this area and glass a little. We were getting close to running out of light by then and he needed to skin the bears.

We headed up the hill and crossing in the road right in front of us was another bear. Oscar saw it. YAHHHHH !!! He got to see a bear. We shot up further on the road and it switched back to see the same bear again. It stopped and looked at us for a second and continued into the brush. We came to another little opening and I pointed out another bear to Oscar. He looked and said, "Thats a Turkey". He was looking closer then I was and in fact there was a turkey closer to us. I pointed out the bear again and we watched it for a min. We started heading down the road and in another spot saw a bear in the road just in front of us. it darted into the brush. We drove to where it had been and shut off the 4-wheeler. We listened and you could hear it in the brush next to us. I could tell my boy didn't like the idea of a bear that close so we moved on again. :D

Getting to be dark by now we looked over the last little drop off. I walked to the Right and my boy said "Bear". I went back to him to look but it already stepped in the brush. So, within about a 30 minute timeframe we saw 4 bear just cruising the roads.

We get back down to the skinning shed and the guys were working on the bear. One was a good bear weighing 328#'s. There was a small bear too. I would have said something but I've taken smaller :) Most of the guys were at camp getting ready to eat dinner.

I started helping by holding a foot and soon I was up to my elbows skinning out a new bear that was just shot that evening. It was a good looking bear at about 225#. I helped them skin the bear and hang the meat in a walk in cooler they had. Oscar just watched and asked some questions as we went.

We went back to camp and ate more dang food then a guy should eat. There was warm running water in the cook tents. I was greatfull after just skinning bear. The cook tents were Huge. I'd guess 12'x30' ? We ate Shrimp and Steak fajitas and had cornbread and corn and ice-cream on angle cake with bananas. I would have loved to enjoy the fire but it was 11PM and we still had 3 hours to drive home.

The trip home was fun at first. Sharing all the bear sightings and hearing what my boy did while I was up the first part when he was at camp. He wanted to stay up the whole way home but at 12:20AM his sentences started to drift. I have to admit the last hour driving home was hard not having anyone to talk to but I'd smile every time I looked over and saw him sleeping. I'm excited for next year when I take him up to have him shoot his first bear :D

Wow....what a great bonzi road trip for you guys! Sharin' it with one of your boys makes it all the more special.

These are some buddies of yours or what?? You must know a few of em' to let you just hang out for the day huh?

And what....no pics??

Sounds like an awesome trip, and lots of fun for the little dude.
That place has to have an amazing bear pop. density,

Sounding like more of a bargain all the time

I don't have many pictures. It was a Wirlwind trip. I picked up my boy from Church at 2PM and after fuel and a food stop we left at 2:30 getting there at 5:30. I think it get's dark around 8:30 ? so we had < 3 hours of day time. i on;y had 30 mins with my boy looknig for bear. I did stay till 11Pm but after skinning some bears we cleaned up and ate and then left. I did take a picture of what the country looks like which I'll post and I have a Blurry picture of a bear on the road in front of us. I have a picture of the 328# bear on the ground at the skinning post as well.

I have to say I haven't seen every bear hunting place but thats the best I've seen so far. Don't think I'm telling you all the bears are shooters there because there are pleanty of smaller bears as well. But getting a 300# bear could be had with jsut a little bit of hunting.

At any rate, I'm mad because I didn't get any pictures of me and the boy either. That being said, I'm guessing he's got a few memories out of it that he'll remember for awhile. And... it won't be the last time we're in the hills together ;)
