Not sure how but i got a first rifle tag, never been anywhere near it. When i found out stopped bought lottery ticket, no joy on that part... Any info/advice is welcome. So excited, wearing youtube and maps out already. Land looks way different than what i normally hunt elk in. Would gladly offer up some advice in return in places i do know....

Anyone know where the masses will be in zone? PRhunter helped me figure out the all important ice/gas/beer (thanks PR) but what about pressure for other49 tags, usually the locals pound atleast 1 area of a zone. Anyone got any insights or lessons learned there? Sounds like moisture is big issue with antlers. not even 6 months away got to get busy with plan...lol.

thanks guys and am already fired up! Chris

If I were to guess where the most pressure would be i'd say most will try to be as close to 16A or B as they can. Just because of the track record those units have. I was in D last year and from the locals that I talked to it sounds like C can be a bit of a tough unit, but your first rifle tag will be better than the late for sure. We all know there are elk there and you have a heck of a year to have a tag in NM!! Good luck!!

Moisture shouldn't be a problem this year...in fact it should be a good year. We've had good precipitation and snow pack up until now. And this is the critical time for nutrition. So, you should be in for a trophy year.

I've hunted 21A near the divide...lots of elk. Just get away from the roads. You might consider Aldo Leopold Wilderness. May even see or hear a wolf in those parts. Get away from roads and people and have a great hunt!

My dad and I also drew rifle tags for 16c! Going to be a blast! Like you I'm also wearing out the maps lol
