Hungarian Partridge

My oldest son’s first game bird was a Hun.

We walked into a point of Tess. Huns springboard up together and I shoot a double on the left side of the dog. Son starts yelling that he shot a bird. I go into Dad mode and plan to let him claim one of my birds. Tess brings us two birds and he grabs “his”. As we’ve celebrating his first bird, I look down and Tess is holding a third bird in her mouth for me to take.View attachment 388697

Same boy last year. A little older and a Lieutenant in the Army. Still hunting Huns with me wearing my old Filson vest.View attachment 388703
Great photo, we appreciate his service in this house.

I went out today.

I was within a mile of where I had the covey marked from Saturday.

Some birds down in the ditch. Holding tight.

Chukar. Lol.

I got two out of that covey.

I walked up in a little bluff near where the huns were Saturday, no dice.

I'll leave it alone for now.

I need to pin down another group I found in September.

Will be getting my daughter her shotgun on the 10th of November.

I’ve noticed they are most definitely homebodies. I can generally get a covey up in the same general area multiple times through a season.

If a covey is all together, they flush together, no stragglers. If they’ve been broken up, then you get singles and pairs. Nothing like stepping on 30 birds that come up underfoot making that high-pitched call.

Could be hunters, or a hawk like I saw on Sunday.

Here’s Sunday’s fun with huns.

Thanks guys. I really do think there is a pioneering population where I was hunting.

As a side note, here is a screen grab from the most recent survey I can find.

I hunt Eureka and Lander, so you can see, very few overall.
