how to fix dried, cracked hide?

A couple of my old antelope shoulder mounts have gotten very dry over the years and developed cracks in the hide along the cheeks and on the forehead. Is there a safe way to soften these spots up so I can maybe glue them back to the form?

BTW, I just acquired these. This is not my neglect.

I would say that the hide would fall apart if you tried to rehydrate it. Best bet would be to get a new cape and remount it.

Check with a local taxi. It is amazing what they can do to restore old mounts.
