High country red stag

Nows the time to target red stags in New Zealand as their antlers are hard. I just spent 4 days in the South Island high country (public land / DIY) looking for stags and chamois. I was happy to shoot both.

Unfortunately I forgot my phone so didn’t get a photo in the field. But here are a couple of photos my friends took back at camp. I’ll post a chamois photo once I get home.

I shot the 11 pointer stag up past the mountian in second photo. Was a 14 hr mission from leaving my base camp early and back again with a very heavy pack!

Yeah ok, only ever really seen the narrower style of heads come out of Canterbury. Good to see some heavy wide buggers there too.

Nice looking stag, I like the shape of it, 14 hours is hard work!
Are you going to stain the antler where the velvet came off?

A red stag is high up on my bucket list of hunts to accomplish! Absolutely beautiful animals!

Thanks Richard. Yes stain the antlers and do a skull mount. Did think about a full shoulder mount but want to keep looking for a big 12.

This is the chamois I got on the same trip. Just 8.5 inches so an averaged sized mature buck.
