My wife and I were in New York the third week in November of 2006. She sings with an alumni choir from college and they were at Carnegie Hall that week.
I happened to be walking around alot by myself sightseeing while the group was practicing, and heard they would be pouring the first concrete for the Freedom Tower while we were there.
So we headed down to the site the morning that the first trucks started pouring, hard to explain the feeling down there. But, we felt honored to be able to just be standing there watching.
