Have you tried intermittent fasting? For me that is the easiest way to loose some pounds.
Simply eat nothing until noon each day, then have a normal lunch and dinner.

Also drink nothing but water or coffee.

I'm in your age class and find loss of endurance more substantial than loss of muscle strength.
So I hike 8 miles every other day in the hills for maintaining endurance.
On the other days I cross-country skii, split firewood, or hike shorter distances with a 60lb pack.
