How much importantance when your Escouting do you put into the Elk concentration areas marked on the Colorado state atlas or On X Maps? I mean, if an area appeared to meet all your criteria you look for but on the OnX map the concentration area layer was say a mile or 2 off, would you still try the area?
Is there anything that over rides the concentration area layer, say a burn or water source?

They are good guidelines and extremely accurate for that specific time of year. In the summer and winter the elk are usually in big groups and in easy areas to spot from a plane i.e. high alpine summer and valley floors in winter. Typically hunting pressure pushes elk back into the timber the first week of archery and then they don't leave cover until the season is over.

So heavy timber/cover around the summer concentration areas are good bets for elk during hunting season, you won't likely find elk in the summer concentration areas after the arrows and bullets start to fly.
