I'm curious if any of you have tried this in the early season and what your experiences were.

I'm thinking of trying some out tonight just to see what happens.

I honestly have never used many scents while hunting and play the wind, but this year I have a spot where the wind kinda of swirls. I'm always looking for that one advantage :)

I have never had any luck with scents myself while hunting but know alot of people who have.I have however had good luck with them trapping so I know they will work with deer.
Anyway to answere your question it should work great for bucks but I have heard it can scare the does out of the area if the bucks get horny and run them out.

I've had more success using making mock scrapes and using a "dominate buck urine". I use doe urine during the rut... late Oct through November.

good luck to all

If you have fresh buck sign - use it !! Freshen their scrapes and/or make a mock scrape and use it there. I've had estrus scent work many times.. but you still need to use the wind in your favor - don't use it as a masking scent.

Once this nice weather breaks and it cools down to normal or below temps, the bucks should start sporting a solid one and get out look'in for some tail - I'm getting the itch too - to kill something that is...;)

I know what you mean...I passed on this last week...kinda wish I had shot him now.

Nice buck! I certainly would not have had restraint! I've left a fewTrails End #307 soaked "tampon thingies" hanging in the area where I've been hunting here in Chaska. Not seeing any sign of rubs or scrapes just yet, but it's only beena few days. I'll have to re-visit the area and check.

I grew up hunting WT in Iowa, and we used scents in Oct...dragging lines, cover scents, estrus lures, wafers. I would say ya have to try about anything to out-whit 'em. Scent control I think is most important, along with stand placement and mock scrapes a close second. note: I now do the same elk hunting (use scents) --- mostly used to cover / mask my stinky a$$ hiking the mountains.

I would have passed on him as well. It is a good buck and later in the season I would likely shoot him but this early in the season it is tough to punch that buck tag. My 10 year old would have shot him in a second! As far as scents, never had a lot of luck with the does estrus scents until the rut is going.

Thanks for the input....I did hang one out and it did not seem to help. I even tried the light rattle...man I can wait for the big boys to start moving....If this one comes back by I might have to shoot him. If I don't I know the shot gunners will anyway.

The absolute best scents I've ever used are the Border Crossing scents from Boss Buck. VH-1 is the doe in heat scent, and the Deer Herd in a stick is the calming/cover scent. I've had bucks come in curling their lips with their noses up in the air and I could see the nostrils flare as the sniffed the air trying to locate the doe. Down here in the lowcountry of SC, the bucks are already running a few does, and the tarsal glands are starting to turn black, so I'm using scents, but you should check with your state DNR and their wildlife biologist as to when is the right time to start using those scents. Too early, and you can spook the bucks.......remember, they ain't dumb and they definitly know when something isn't right!!!!!!
