Deer Recommendations

My buddies and I are looking to head out west again next fall, but this time we would like to do a deer hunt. We have started applying for preference points in CO and have been buying points in WY. We would like to keep accumulating points, so we are looking at 2nd choice/leftover tags in WY or general tags in MT. We are looking to rifle hunt and harvest a buck. Doesn't need to be a dandy, just looking for a good opportunity at a deer, both muley and whitetail are fine, although none of us have harvested a muley before.

I was looking at Region A in Wyoming and is on the top of my list so far due to the availability of tags and we've at least been through that area before. I don't know much about MT's deer hunting so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated...

Just make sure you don't end up on the tv show "wardens." Why does it seem like every person they make contact with is treated like they are doing something illegal until they find out otherwise. You would think the Montana Fish & Game would want the public to have positive interactions with the wardens instead of being left with a bad taste in their mouths.

I don't watch the show, so I cant comment on any particular treatment, but I think maybe they start filming when they think there is something fishy going on, or potential for some drama. I ran into a warden with a cameraman last November, the warden and the cameraman were both really cool and didn't treat me like I was guilty of something. But then again I didn't have an animal on the ground either.

JNagel, sorry for changing the way your thread topic was going.

Both Wyoming and Montana would be a fun hunt. I don’t know anything on region A in Wyoming, but I’ve hunted Montana quite a bit over the years so ill comment on that. I think you can have a really fun Mulie hunt in Eastern Montana, especially if you’re not looking for a trophy. There are quite a few deer out there which makes for a fun hunt when you’re seeing game regularly. There is also quite a bit of public land in some places. But even better, there is a lot of Block Management property out in Montana that allows hunters to hunt private land. You can order the BMA books from Montana sometime in late August next year, that way you can look at all the properties that allow access.

It’s a Big state, there are opportunities to hunt deer in each region, but ide recommend staying away from SW Montana if strictly deer hunting. That’s an area of the state that takes years to learn and get on the deer, even then, you’re not seeing the numbers that you would see out East.
