Could this style of bugle tube work for elk?

Hi everyone,

I’m a red deer hunter from New Zealand and use a compact silicone roaring horn for calling stags. It’s been working really well for red deer here, but I’ve been wondering whether something like it could also work for elk bugling.

I know elk calling is usually done with diaphragm calls and bugle tubes, so I’m curious if anyone thinks they could bugle using a horn-style tube instead.

If anyone experienced with elk bugling would be interested, I’d be happy to send a couple over to the US for people to try and give honest feedback on whether it works or not. I’d mainly just love to see how it performs with real elk callers and learn whether the concept translates across species.

Appreciate any thoughts from people who spend time chasing elk.

I dont see why not. I bugle with an open reed coyote howler call that has a large wooden horn. Aparently coyotes and elk have similar vocal ranges as it does both excellently.

The other year while I was archery deer hunting, I heard someone calling with a musical instrument.
Trumpet?
You could hear the individual notes they were playing as they went up and down in pitch.

Nothing answered them back.

I think part of it may have been that they were too loud.
I was about 1,200 yards away and it was loud to me.
The sounds of the woods just stopped.

So feeling like my hunt for the evening was essentially done, I pulled out my diaphragm call and started turkey gobbling back at them.

Wish I could have seen the confused look on their face. Lol
