Colorado Elk Unit 41,42,411 1st Rifle

The cliffs of the mesa provide some absolutely amazing glassing opportunities with no logical way to make a move on a herd of elk when seen. It sure is fun to glass elk 10 miles away though and gives you something to move to and target the next day.
There’s some idiots from from a yupper state that have been shooting long range off the rim into Whitewater Basin the last few years. They don’t even bother to hike in and check on their shots. CPW knows and is looking for them.

That country can be THICK. Meaning travel and glassing through it can be pretty hard. Don't let your camp get raided by a bear
So true, some of the 'open' stuff on OnX is actually head high oak brush that is virtually impassable! Also, saw one of the biggest bears I have seen on opening morning of first rifle. Grab a bear tag!
There are elk in some of the ‘thicker’ areas though. IMG_4414.jpeg

wsco, I'm kind of piggy backing off of this post just because I haven't made enough posts for my own thread yet. Being someone who has hunted their quiet a bit, do you have any tips for someone going for rifle black bear Sept 2-30? I'm going to pick four or five days to go out of that block of time and I know it will be packed with elk hunters as well. I've done a lot of research on maps looking for areas with no roads, trying to find riparian areas where there should be oaks and choke cherries and I have some spots picked out to start out with at least. I have only lived in Colorado for a year and this will be my first time chasing solely bear for the days that I am there. Good luck this season with whatever tags you get! and thanks for the time at least reading this.

Been a minute since I’ve been on here been super busy. Long story short we drew the tag and pretty excited. Been doing a lot of e scouting trying to find the best place to start. Would love to get out and hit it on foot. Just extremely busy with work and kids stuff so relying on e scouting.

Thanks for all the input giving before. Thanks again

Jeff,
I have seen plenty of bears I the area but am not sure how I would go about trying to find one. I have seen them while still elk in the hunting the dark timber. The bear I have bumped into were in the aspens mostly. I am not sure what they were feeding on but that time of year they are pretty food focused. The areas I have seen them were above the oak zone in elevation but quite a bit. Sorry I can't provide more useful Intel.
Good luck.--R
