Cancellation Hunts

Has anyone snagged a last minute cancellation hunt? My dad and I almost pulled the trigger on a Alberta horseback moose hunt, but my dad doesn't think he'd be able to physically do it. 10 day horseback hunt, $5500, includes moose and wolf tags, damn I want to go! My wife was even on board. Are cancellation hunts a good way to save some coin or does the risk outway the savings?

I think as long as you do your homework it should be fine. It all comes down to whether or not the Outfitter is decent or not. Granted with a cancellation you are likely to have much less time for your due diligence.

I know a guy that owns his own business,that gives him the freedom to take off on short notice. He has gone on some awesome hunts for around 50% of what they would normally cost. He has standing offers with a couple outfits in Canada and Alaska. I know hes been with one Guy in Alaska four times, and they have a real good relationship. I would think that a ''Standby'' client would be really valuable to an Outfitter, giving them an insurance policy of sorts.

In a few years when my Children are grown this is how I hope to be able to do a few hunts that require an Outfitter or Family member.

I had an opportunity to jump on an Alaskan brown bear cancellation hunt a few years ago. My ultimate dream hunt! I believe it was $8500.00. Had a hunt already booked and couldn't financial swing both hunts. Still kicking myself! Can't blame an outfitter for wanting to get a full payment instead of 50% and a great way for someone to save! Like stated above research is key! I'm signed up with several cancellation hunt websites. One day I'm sure I'll grab one!
