California Sooty Grouse

The archery season here in California is in full swing, and after many years, I finally nailed one with my bow (plenty in the past with shotgun). The grouse in my area don’t let you get close. This one was at 33 yards. I’m looking forward to a grouse meal soon! Also nailed a very small Mt quail, especially in comparison.

Best eating bird there is IMO. Why did they have to separate the blue grouse into sooty and dusky? Now I have to find somewhere to shoot a sooty to fill bucket list of taking all grouse species
 
That's awesome, I've only heard them drumming in the spring when out hunting mushrooms, but haven't come across them in the fall.

I've hiked far and wide trying to find drumming birds. I've never been able to pinpoint their location.
