Brain tanned bison hide

Very cool. Forgive the ignorance but what is the purpose of the smoking process? You planning on making a rug out of it or something else?
Apparently the pre-smoke before tanning helps open up the fibers so they absorb the tan better. The post-tan smoke is supposed to be a preservative of sorts and to keep the bugs from wanted to eat it, guess that's how the Native Americans did it.
 
That old crippled up guy Tom on that show "Mountain Men" makes it look easy.....yeah, right. Good Job on the Hide, looks great.
Yah I see why a person can charge high dollar for hand tanning hides, lots and lots of labor. I'd like to see his work in person. If I ever make it up to the Yaak area I might see if I can stop in and see his work, he's a tough old bird!
