Big Bullets for Big Animals?

I love the 340 Wby, used the 210 XBT on PG back in '98. It was fine on any antelope, including the big Namibian Gemsbok. However, I shot a big zebra mare on the point of the shoulder, angling toward me, around 125yds. It busted the big knuckle but stopped there. She ran ( dragging that leg) with the mob she was in and stopped a few yards away as they were milling in the bush. I head shot her. In retrospect, I feel I should have used a heavier, 225. But hey, it "was" flat shooting and thats what I had it made for, the longer ranges in Namibia. The zebra was an opportunity I couldn't pass. IMO, Zebra are an amazingly dense muscle, dense boned, thick skin "Jewell of Africa", I could never resist one! ha

I remember when the 8mm Rem Mag came out an a contractor at our job had one. His wife had an identical Mod 700 in 7mm Rem Mag. He said while it was brutal in recoil, it was a stone cold Texas WT and Javalina/hog killer, ha! He said he and his wife shot some Javalina around 400yds. The 7mm stayed in the pigs, the 8mm blew on through. Her the 175 and him the 185, both factory. I knew why, of course, but he was just astounded! ha I never shot one. Shot many rounds through a battlefield P/U Mod 98 with Turkish MG ammo though!

I agree, a 300 WM with a 180 grain is sufficient for anything on this continent. That said I am in love the my 6.5CM. I'm shooting 130 gr Barnes TSX and it has performed flawlessly for me and the family on a number of big bodied mules. I honestly would take that combo elk hunting and feel confident it would do the job.

Lovin my 9.3x62, CZ550 fs. Really liked the 232gr Oryx. Shooting 250gr Accubonds now. Killed a cow moose, handful of elk (including the bull in my avatar), couple deer (WTD fawn too) and an antelope with it.

Eat right up to the hole. I have same rifle and shoot the 232’s also. They do a great job. I have yet to recover one.

My 'bigger bore" would be my .350 Remington Magnum. Old school Model 600 with the laminated stock, dog-leg bolt, and shark fin sights on the vent rib lol. It will punch both your shoulder and a hole!

Remington initially just offered the 350 Magnum with two loads: a 200-grain Core-Lokt advertised then at 2710 fps, and a 250-grain Core-Lokt at 2410 fps. Was down to just a handful of factory left until a fellow Huntalker (TBone) sent a couple of boxes my way.

Black Dog Custom Ammo out of Scobey, MT carries a bit as well from 180-grain to 250-grain in a variety of bullet constructions. His
225 Grain Nosler Partition Jacketed Soft Point will run ya about $90

I recovered the bullet from bull, but that's it. Yep, very little meat damage. About like the pic Marv shared.
