Beware of Scammers on the Classifieds Section!

Last year or so somebody figured out my password and took over my “RobG” account. He offered for sale some top end equipment for a low price.

I’ve been around here for a long time so a lot of people knew me. Someone could have easily been scammed since they thought they were dealing with me, who they trusted.

Someone figured it was too good to be true and alerted me by email, so we were able to shut it down before anyone got scammed.

So even if you recognize somebody’s username it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s them.

I just wanted to share a recent incident with a member on here who responded to my Wanted to Buy ad for a rifle scope. The member contacted me through the messaging here and we spoke by phone and went back and forth through email. After negotiating on a price, he insisted on accepting payment through PayPal Friends and Family and would not agree to use the Goods and Services transaction type, even after I told him I would cover the 3% transaction fee to accept the funds. PayPal does not offer any buyer protection when using the Friends and Family transactions. I know most people on this forum have good intentions, but just remember there are always some out there who don't. I have messaged the Admin staff on here with the Contact Us message system this week but have not received a response.

Too bad it would be an excercise in futility, but it would be interesting to see if a "fishing trip" for scammers would draw out a bunch and then nuke them, but afraid that there is a never ending supply of scumbags.

I'm always wary of new members with such informative posts. It sure looks like someone trying to build a post count. I could be wrong.
