Spending time with friends and family on a hunt are times to be cherished!

More and more lately I've been taking in the scenery as well as looking for deer.

Both my daughter and I took our first bucks with my Ruger 77 MKII in 257 Roberts.
Me using the 115gr NBT. Deer made it 10 yards before hitting a tree and going down for the count.

Daughter using the 115gr Berger VLD. About 60-70 yard shot.
"He flinched. Kinda puffed up and went straight legged, then fell over."

What rifle I take depends on the weather and how far I plan on getting away from the truck.

Would like to see how fast the 257 WBY & 7mm WBY put one down.
Got the ever reliable 7mm-08AI running again.
And would like to try the Browning A Bolt SSA in 25 WSSM and the Henry Single Shot Brass in 45-70.

Personally seen the 178gr 30-06 fail 4 times on 3 separate animals. All 4 rounds completely exploded with less then 4-5 inches of penetration no exit not even a discernible wound channel other then a giant entrance hole. Nothing recovered but tiny scraps of jacket and lead. If anything at least they were consistent. All good shots from 150-280 yards the things are just little hand grenades. They did group really well on paper. Have heard many stories including some guys on this sight who had identical problems. Also have heard some who have had good results and that apparently they're built tougher now and that was really only a problem orginally . All I know is the ones I used where the absolute worst performing round I've ever put into a animal.

I would think so they were in between 2600-2700fps at the muzzle. I've used a lot of SST's and while I've seen some huge exit wounds I've never had them do that.

Ive only seen 212s at 2600+ impact and they all made a baseball sized hole straight through their intended target.

Yeah, big fan of the SSTs. Killed a boxcar full of deer with those in .308.

One of the 4 shots hit shoulder the rest were all behind the shoulder one a bit back about where the liver lung meet. All 4 bullets separated from the jacket blew into a thousand pieces the largest of which I could find was the base of the jacket. This was September of 2020 when they were relatively new I've heard hornady has fixed the problems they were having with the eldx but have no clue of the validity of that. If you go down the rabbit hole a bit you'll find lots of testimonials that mirror mine (there was even a thread on here if memory serves me) also youtube has several videos that show the bullet failures on gel blocks. I've also heard guys like yourself say they love them and they work well for them. If it works for you rock it brother just sharing my experience.

Jacket and core seperation isnt necessarily indicative of bullet failure - if thats what you are referring to...

I consider not being able to find more then the base of the jacket and some scraps of lead extreme bullet failure. Especially with no exit at 150 yards with a dead behind the shoulder shot. Certainly looked nothing like the back of the box.

I'd disagree.

Biggest piece I've ever found from a Berger VLD is the jacket. And all under the offside hide.

The key being "under the offside hide".
Meaning they penetrated deep enough, and dumped all of the energy into the animal.

I don't need to see how many dead trees behind the animal it takes to stop it.

I would agree that ideally the bullet would be found on the offside hide dumping all of its energy in the animal. But I'd also like to see 60-70% weight retention. Why I've switched to using Partitions almost exclusively they perform in the above manner with shocking consistency. I guess I just don't see the point in using a bullet that falls to pieces when there so many quality bullets out there that don't.

This was from a 300WSM Accubond. He was quartering towards and the entry wound was just behind the left shoulder. Practically turned him inside out.

Coyotes are very poor test medium for any big game bullet. Your results are the norm.

Just another opinion.. 100 grain Hornady Interlock at 2950 with varget powder does wonders on coyote to elk. Some meat damage but no walkoffs. Deer to 600 yards , elk to 450 no problem killing.
