I have a new to me Remington 700 Mtn. rifle chambered in .257 Roberts. I'm waiting on dies, can't wait to start loading some for this cartridge. My initial load will be: Winchester cases, WLR primer, Nosler 100 gr. Ballistic tip and IMR 4350. What do you guys think? Anybody else using another successful combination?

Chris

Chris, I've found that 4320 works pretty good with the 100 grain bullets. 4350 and 4831 have always performed best with the 115 and 117 and 120 grainers.

Hi Chris,
I shoot a 257 Roberts, Ackley improved. I love that little rifle for white tail deer, I have shot 8 or 10 with it over the years, have yet to trail one more than 20 or so yards. What amazes me with my 257 is, you can put my 87 sptz., my 90 hp and 117 sptz round in mixed and it will shoot a 3/4", with no adjust of the scope. I like IMR 4064 with the 87 and 90 bulets, 210 FED primes in all, I get 3460 FPS out of this mix, I use IMR 4831 with my 117 hunting load, I only get 3180 FPS out it, but it sure works well, about 1/2" at 100 yds. Enjoy your Robert.
Be safe, have fun!

My 700 Classic in 257 R. lives on IMR-4350. With 117 Sierras I can get 2890fps with three shots under an inch. Sometimes way under. I haven't chronoed my 100 grain loads yet. My rifle has a standard length action so I can play a bit with OAL where I assume the Mountain Gun uses a short action. One thing to keep in mind is that some (but not all) published data is kept conservative for older guns so I would suggest looking around a bit and comparing info. Barsness and Waters have some decent info in various articles. Good luck, Joe.

I reload this round for my buddy, and his gun loves IMR 4831 and the 117 gr bullet...a half inch at 100 yards. It seems to be a very accurate round!

I have a 257 Ackley and love it. For deer I use the 115gr ballistic tip and haven't had to chase one yet. Had the roberts in a Ruger #1 and am sorry I sold it.
