We had a wild experience in Montana on Thursday afternoon.

As we were driving down a dirt road, we noticed a very large bird fly off a dead deer near the road. In the next instant, a larger bird tried to fly from the deer and fell down, acting wounded. We could instantly tell it was a very large mature bald eagle. As we got closer, we realized it had been caught in a trap left by someone trying to trap coyotes or badgers on the dead deer.

When we stopped, several Hutterite brethren stopped also and got out. They are the gentleman in the black. My initial impulse was to call Fish and Game and not even touch it for fear of getting in trouble, but we had no cell service and I didn’t think it would survive the several hours it would take to get help. So we got a blanket to throw over it, calmed it down and got it loose.

He (or she) seemed a little tired, but managed to fly off across the praire.

It's good to see that the bird lived through the ordeal. Man, bald eagles are majestic birds. Thanks for the great field photos.
