Our second elk hunt went well, with some (relatively) nice animals coming out of the hills this year. All six bulls taken were big and healthy, if not quite up to Greenhorn standards. ;) Still very respectable for what and where they are. Check out the pics at http://www.kdfwr.state.ky.us/elkhnt02.htm . The Phillips guy looks to have the best of the bunch to my untrained eye. :D

Kiwi, it's not all wine and roses here either, but it is better than most! Kentucky has the enviable position of being a state populated by many hunters, and the elk restoration is being done in an area where there is little other activity (reclaimed coal mines). Between the two there was little complaint when the program was proposed. Other states, however, have raging battles between different groups such as sportsmen and farmers or ranchers. We started hunting early to establish a precedent and to keep the population in check so they wouldn't spread into "problem areas." Unfortunately, that also means we'll never have more than a token herd simply due to lack of space. :(

I can only applaude the efforts you guys make to have a sustainable hunting enviroment
Its a pity the same is not done here :(
