.284 Winchester Handloads?

I have a .284 Winchester that my grandfather gifted me which he built years ago. My grandfather was a machinist, tool and die maker. Used to run an old-school lathe and very gifted with precision. He has since passed so I want to honor his memory and keep using the rifle. The rifle is built off a Mauser action and has a 24-inch barrel. Unsure on barrel twist rate. The chamber is quite long, given that standard .284 COAL is 2.8 inch while a COAL that touches the lands is 3.17 inch. Finding .284 Win factory ammo is essentially impossible. I have plenty of once-fired brass.

Curious if anyone here on HT has experience with a .284 Win and would be interested in hearing how you are reloading for your 284 Win. Wanting to know bullet, bullet weight, powder, powder charge, seating depth, etc...

I built a .284 a few years ago. It rapidly became my favorite hunting rifle. The 2 best powders I've found are VV N150 and RL15. Varget isn't bad. N150 is spectacular with bullets in the 140gn range and RL15 for 150gn pills. You'll hear people talk about IMR4350, but I've never gotten better than mediocre results from that. If I had to choose just one powder for mine, it would certainly be N150. That said, I shot an elk and a deer last fall with a 150gn Accubond pushed by RL15. Very accurate and moving about 2900fps.

.284 Win is an awesome cartridge. You're going to love it.

I run the 140gr Accubond using H4350 seated .060 of the lands. My velocity is around 2930fps with 53gr of powder. PLEASE work up for your rifle. My rifle shoots 1/2MOA all day. Works magic on SC Whitetail deer!

I run the Remmington 9 1/2 Magnum primer, not needed but I run it in about everything.
