2026 Garden

np307-SHOW OFF!

Going to 37 tonight and 33 tomorrow night. Windy again today. Hoping it calms down enough by this evening to put frost blankets on.
Clouds wizzing by at 90 some peaks getting moisture, nothing at all in the valley.
Gotta be some advantages to this heat. Gonna be almost 100 Friday with full humidity.

It's so windy here today I have whitecaps on the bird bath. So far all the frost blankets are staying in place. Chased a bunny out of the Amish House(bought it from the Amish) so that's it's name.
I really don't blame the bunny warm and out of the wind. But I could see my Mexican Sour cucumbers being munched on. Fed everything that wasn't under a blanket this morning. 30 mph wind gusts just aren't fun today.

90s and humid with storms and winds up to 70 heading my way. I really need to get out there and weed but it's too hot and muddy from the rain we got so far. I have steel roofing panels laid between the rows to cut the weeds and to have a dry place to walk when picking, so it's only weedy in the actual rows of veggies. I'll get to it eventually.

Got lucky here at my place and just had some wind and a little rain. Had a guy here buying my Harley and we were watching for a window for him to ride home! My daughter had a close call, though. They live south of me 25 miles and had a tornado right at the edge of town. Tore up some stuff in the country but nothing in town itself. Streator, where I go for groceries now and then got hit by one. Guess it tore things up and I heard rumors of a death.

Washburn tornado by my daughter.

Lettuce didnt appreciate the heat today. Thankfully it'll be short-lived but still. And surprise, surprise those thunderstorms are now going around us it looks like. Dry as dust here. Screenshot_20260612_173405_Weather.jpg

The tornadoes that hit around me were both EF3. Streator had some houses destroyed and some injuries but no fatalities. The one by my daughter's house went through and crossed the highway going right through the middle of a brand new solar farm. Ripped out a section of the wire fence and stripped the crops out of the field.

This year is going to be a rough gardening year. Review of the garden shows a complete corn seed failed germination in three boxes. We used year old seed. We’ll buy new seed and try with a prayer to get corn before a frost.

I did a fruit tree walk. Complete failure there too. I found one, ONE!, apple. Otherwise, no apples, cherries, pears or peaches. We had a few days of weird frost timing that killed all the flowers. First time this has ever happened.

Good news - garden fruit is great - strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. They’re be lots of ice cream and fruit, cobblers and canning the rest.

New weedeater finally arrived and I was able to clean up the garden. It looks kept finally.

Broccoli and strawberries need picked currently. Green beans seeds arrived and need planted too (first crop failure).
