Going on a late Oct goat hunt in BC where its going to be wet, and looking for a 0 degree synthetic. Backpack friendly. Any recommendations?

I have a RAB Solar 4. It has been replaced by the Solar Eco 4. They call it a 0° bag, but it is actually rated at 12°F. I has been a good 3 season bag for me.
Read the ratings label carefully. Often the rating in the name is just marketing.
Don't overlook used sites like Geartrade

Rab's ratings are definitely optimistic. I have what they call a 25 degree bag, but it is only comfort rated to 37. Wish I looked into the ratings more closely.

It’s been more than a decade but when I did my goat hunt, I went with a Marmot Never Summer zero degree down bag. Great bag - and I was too warm.

If I were to do it again, I’d have gone synthetic…but down is most certainly more pack-friendly.

I recently bought a western mountaineering 0 degree bag. Although it’s not synthetic I would highly recommend it. Super light, warm, and compact. I’ve been on numerous Alaska sheep and goat hunts and wouldn’t worry about down with a decent outer. Just put it in a dry bag each day.

I like my 650 Hyke & Byke 0 degree down. I had one trip where it rained multiple times daily and my bag stayed damp the entire time. As long as it isn’t soaked/submerged it worked fine and kept my warm. Your body heat dries out any dampness on the inside as you sleep.

The Kodiak?

Anyone making custom synthetic bags these days?

I had a custom Apex insulated 20 degree bag made by nunatak for an AK sheep hunt and it weighed near the same as my WM alpinlite 20 degree bag. I dont think Nunatak makes them anymore.. It got that light by being a center zip (less zipper length) and using light 10d face fabric. My thought process was that Apex is a continuous filament insulation so if the bag gets some cuts/rips, its not like the insulation is going to pour out like down would.

I use a Viam outdoors 0 degree custom quilt that I've had for a few years. I have used it down to the single digits and last year for second rifle elk in colorado. It is a quilt and not a bag but it has kept me warm regardless if it rains/cold etc. They currently only make 10 degree quilts that come with a hood but they ship quick, respond to questions and isn't super expensive especially when compared to the other sleeping bag/quilt companies. I believe they also use an apex type of insulation or at least they were for the one I bought.

I have the same bag and this has been my experience, as well.

Yeah, i'd recommend anyone confirm quilts work for them before going that route though especially for cold weather. My quilt experiment ended pretty quickly as I couldn't keep drafts from sapping the warmth. With an oversized 0 degree quilt i wasn't staying warm in 30ish degree temps.

I hesitate on using any down even treated when you know you are going into a wet environment. Your sleeping bag is your last line to get warm and sometimes dried out. As down compresses it looses its function.

I don’t like the thought of relying on keeping it in a dry bag. Yes that is always the goal to keep it dry. I like having the extra security of if the worst were to happen. Everyone has their own opinions on it though.

I'm a pretty active sleeper and I don't like being cramped. There is another company called zenbivy that seems to have multiple options with a wide temperature range also. I've wanted to check into that since they have a "sheet" that clips on the quilt to keep it in place along with the pillow.

I have a Kifaru Slick bag 0 degree. If you fit in a regular length / width they are only 3.45 lbs. I just checked and apparently the price is now double what they were when I bought one. That being said they are bomb proof. You can occasionally find one for sale in the Rokslide classifieds.
