    Protective Measures For Traditional Muzzleloaders?

I get good accuracy in My GPR with a .535 ball, a .018 pillow ticking patch, and between 90 and 100 grains of goex fffg, though for target and competition, i dial back to a .530 ball with the same thickness of patch and 70grs of goex fffg

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

An update on my load development process. Today, thanks to my friend I was able to get my Lyman out to 50 yards for load development. The first load I sighted the rifle in for was my target load, 70grs of goex fffg behind a .530 Hornady ball with an .018 pillow ticking patch. That is the target...

.54 caliber patched round ball elk load?

Hello Hunt talk forum, long time listener first time caller. A friend has offered me a landowner muzzleloader cow tag in New Mexico for fall of 2024. I am very excited and I would like to do it as traditionally as possible. I have a left handed Lyman Great Plains Rifle in .54 that is twisted...

    Kansas elk 2023

Congratulations on the grandbaby, you might try calling in to grain elevators in the area, see who is having problems with elk, and see if maybe you could get their number. I have a buddy who hunts mulies in Nebraska and that is his strategy for getting permission to hunt private.

    7mm recoil help

If you hand load you can knock the velocity down to 7mm-08 levels, or add a slip on recoil pad from academy, I put one on a 7mm-08 to get a better lop on the gun it just so happened to drastically reduce the felt recoil as well.

    DRT Bullets

Looking at ballistic gel testing on them, I don't think they do what they're advertised to do. The copper fragments are tiny and add nothing to wounding, and they fragment quickly, drastically reducing penetration. I wouldn't use them on anything I wanted to die in a quick manner, or on a...

    Mauser Caliber Ideas

How do you like the 257 Ackley? What kind of velocities are you getting and is it worth it to go the Ackley route?

    Barnes lrx question

I think as long as the range is inside of 450 yards, they're going to be apples and apples. However, beyond that the higher bc of the LRX is going to give it more velocity and energy. For how I hunt, the 168 would be my pick, though I have not ever put a bullet into an elk, so take that advice...

    7mm-08

I have a 7mm-08 and love it. It has a short barrel, and even cheap ppu 140gr soft points expand well and penetrate deeply. I shot a 200ish pound whitetail buck a few years ago, shot was at 200 yards broadside. Bullet entered, broke a rib, and exited with a 3 inch exit hole, breaking 3 more ribs...

    Kansas elk 2023

Beautifully written story, hope you can close out the season with an elk, keep us updated. As a Kansas resident it was cool to come across your story and read it through. I have thought about applying for bonus points, and I think this post has given me the motivation to begin to do so.

Old 8 with 41 magnum revolver

That's a good looking Buck, and a cartridge that I was always curious about. How does it compare to the .44 magnum as far as power/penetration go?
