    Accura V2 discontinued

WOW almost bought that model but went for the Optima V2 Nitride coated. Same they discontinued it. IMO the models I researched were very close to each other other than the Accura being a little more money. In the end I knew I’d be using it in CO and there are a lot of ML restrictions there as...

Drew an Elk MZ tag... now what?

First off congratulations on that tag. Second getting your hands on a CVA Blackhorn 209 breechplug is a success in and by itself. I went with the same CVA earlier this year hoping to draw a CO ML tag but opted to just buy a point and will apply next year. AZ is a most anything goes ML hunting...

Leupold VX-3i or VX-5HD, which one?

Both are nice. I went with the VX-5HD. Couldn’t ask for any better performance from a scope. The windplex reticle is what I decided on and really like it. The CDS dial is a no brainer so I just deal with wind now. The windplex helps with the hold adjustment. The clarity of the glass is what’s so...

How big must a bull or buck be to mount?

You can always do a European Mount or just horns / antlers.

Said goodbye to a dear friend today

Truly sad. Loosing a dog is hard to deal with and a day every dog owner dreads. Six years is a short time but as others have said you have plenty of memories. Others have said get back on that wagon and get another dog right away. I never subscribed to that theory but have changed my mind and...

    Do-it-all freezer filling rifle

Gotta love the Tikka T3’s, well built and accurate. .308 or 270 is a good choice given your recoil wishes. My T3 is sub 1/2 min at 100 yards but its a 300 WinMag. Pretty much over kill for stuff smaller than elk but it is my elk gun! Not a believer in one and done. Fill the safe then buy another...

    InReach or Zoleo?

I like the garmin InReach better. You can find them on sale once in awhile or buy with REI 10% back. Archery hunted remote Alaska back in 1989 no GPS or cell phones, just common sense, a bow & pistol. Rather be safe than sorry hence the pistol.

    Rental Truck Experience

I remember flying from CA to AZ for business followed by an archery hunt. having been a year since I was back in my favorite spot I thought a rental car would do the trick for the most part. Upon landing I found an off airport RE at site with brand new 4X4 Jeep Cherokees. So the guy asks me if I...

    Calling all coffee snobs...

Life’s too short for cheap coffee (& TP). I now use a Firebox Nano, grinder and a coffee press. Dunkin Donuts cinnamon coffee whole bean freshly ground and I’m good to go.

Things I Wish I'd known about Elk Hunting

Do a hitch in the Marine Corps and you’ll learn your rifle is never 10 feet away especially when your pants are around your ankles! And never means never!

    Boots for Elk Hunting?

Thats funny but great move on the boots. I’ve mostly worn Danner over the years and they worked well for me but now too have started using Kenetrek. Insulated Mt Extreme for snowy cold hunts and Hardscrabble for warmer weather. What a difference. Worth it? You’ll never know until you pull the...

    Tree Stand Safety

No safety line should have a knot named a Deadman’s knot. What marketing idiot came up with that one, lol. I’m now thinking about getting another tree stand and think the full body harness is hat should be used once in the stand. I do see the benefit of a lineman’s belt on the ascent/decent.

    Vets only

I’m a close air support former Marine Grunt type of vet. I’ll take the A10. Remember Cobra brass raining down in close air support runs, very hot brass.
