Sorry, I don't think that's a very good idea. At the ranges we are anticipating there are many calibers that would be more effective. A 45/70, 450 Marlin, might be a good choice for a rifle.
I use a compass and map. I fiddled with a Garmin many years ago and on the first outing a system rolled in and eliminated the signal. That was that as far as I'm concerned.

Coming out of the forest hauling raw meat would attract any dog's attention. Bear spray would have been funnier than getting bit.
