I picked up a (Ruger) Marlin 1894 44 magnum in 2024. It's pretty much everything I could ever want in a lever action rifle. I chose .44 mag so I could hunt straight-wall states including MI, where I'm from. 357 would have been fine too but I liked the idea of the 44. If shots are under 150, I'm...
The context I was missing
I'm familiar enough with the theory, but I was trying to understand exactly how it was pitched to state agencies. I'm not tapped in to southeastern turkey issues, so I don't know the history. Of course they would want to jump on anything that could help with the...
I haven't paid much attention to him, that's true. My question was more asking about whether or not the state agencies that pushed season dates back did it because of the dominant gobbler stuff or because of other factors relating to nest success/turkey populations (whether or not it actually is...
Why do you think the "dominant gobbler theory" was the reason that states delayed starting dates? I don't get the fixation on this dominant gobbler thing, it seems like it was based more on long-term population declines than any singular social dynamic.
I can't help but laugh about the "future generations" framing. Perpetual easements are one of the only things future generations could actually count on. Hope this fails and never gets touched ever again.
Fun fact, this isn't Curtis Mayfield. It's really common to see this attributed to Mayfield, but this is actually "Be thankful for what you got" by William DeVaughn. Fantastic song either way
I'm definitely not an expert, but I could start a thread that discusses how to start building wooden bows and detailing the common issues that I ran into/that people commonly have questions about if that sounds like something people would be interested in. Seems like a bunch of people want to...
So it was a severe fire + a lot more extensive than just riparian replanting. I'll withhold judgment with that in mind, even if it is going slower than the other section due to the lengthy planning process. Hopefully the plant community and the stream itself ends up reflecting what they are...
Right, and my point of bringing the literature up is to question what the heck they expected to happen? Like unless this spot was an absolute moonscape, there's no reason to assume this would ever be worthwhile, assuming that this is the extent of what was done.
I don't know the specifics on any of this, but I don't see why they even tried to do anything? It was just because of the fire? I'm not super well-versed on fire-related riparian restoration literature, but I was under the impression that unless the fires were super severe there was really no...
I wasn't recommending it, just stating their existence. Rereading the thread I can see why me saying that in this context sounds like I might be suggesting it, but I was thinking of them causing issues while hunting these units, not using them.
Man, that looks awesome. You got a specific recipe on the hush puppies or do you just go by feel? Never made them before but I think you have convinced me to try with that last pic.
Wtf I can't believe I missed this, I'm glad it got bumped again. Nothing better than tracking in the big woods, even when it's brutal (especially?). The way they use the wind and the terrain is truly remarkable. I miss it constantly down here. No replacement for a long day of tracking, as far as...
