I used a 7mm RM on my Canadian moose last fall. 25 yard shot with a 150gr factory CX through both lungs. He trotted about 30 yards and then tipped over. I don't see how the result would have been any different with a 30-06, 308 or 300 WM. Bullet weights, velocity and recoil will be similar...
Get a Tikka T3x in the cartridge of your choice and have the barrel cut and threaded. It probably won't be the cheapest on your list when it's all said and done, but it will fit the bill for light and accurate.
129, if I remember correctly. I seared for a minute on each side, which would have brought the final temp up a couple of degrees to a good medium-rare.
Antelope backstrap vacuum sealed with a bit of rosemary and Montreal seasoning, cooked in the sous vide for a few hours, then finished with a quick, hot sear on the cast iron.
The tags are for shooting older age class bucks that most with the main 270 tag would pass on, party for more hunter opportunity and partly to help reduce buck numbers. The bios exact words were that the young 3 point was "not what the tag was for", and that it was too early to tell what a buck...
One of them went and wacked the first 2.5 year-old 3 point he could find, just to bring it back to the biologist and show her out of spite. Real classy.
Shorten the season for OTC mule deer units so that they end before the rut. Close them 10/31 or 11/5 or so. No one loses opportunity. Everyone with a tag still gets to hunt. You could still get lucky and stumble across a buck of a lifetime in October. More bucks will be able to live to maturity...
Agreed with what was said above. You won't see any difference inside the store with good light. Outside in low light is the only way you'll be able to get a good comparison. Even better if you can get them on a tripod.
90-degree weather for much of September, 3x as many hunters as I typically see, elk not in the usual spots, blizzard and zero degrees to start rifle season, sunny and warm to finish it. This year was anything but normal for me.
I have a Leica 2400 and like it a lot. Good glass, and quick readings. It does have a small delay between the initial reading and the angle-compensated one. It probably takes about an extra second to do the calculation.
