Not that I'm trying to talk you out of it in any way, but just sure you read the fine print on those credit card offers if you're banking on that 15%. A lot of times those things either A. Don't apply to firearms or B. Are capped at a certain $ amount.
Sorry to be a downer
If I'm going on a once in a lifetime trip to Africa, I'm bringing a back up gun. So rebarrel, and get a new rifle that's something nice and reliable. That way you have your heirloom with you, and potentially a new heirloom as well that you have more faith in. Maybe even get the opportunity to...
Go with the screw in type for sure. Snap on's are junk and will come off in the brush. The ones with replaceable fiber optics are nice too if you ever break one or want to change colors. I think the rear bead is a matter of personal preference.

I have a 6-18x40 also...I think I paid somewhere in the $400-$500 range for it new. A 50mm objective probably would have been $100 more. Are you sure it's a 50mm objective? I don't recall them making a 50mm in the VX-2, but I could be wrong.
I don't. Besides keeping a little dust or lint off the lense I can't really see the point. As someone else pointed out, the quality and coating on these lenses is pretty damn good. I certainly am not going to abuse mine, but to use a second cover inside of a soft padded case doesn't make much...
