I know of many people that would have just gutted and gilled that elk and head right home. Very admirable thing of you to do by calling it in. I like to surround myself with hunting partners and friends of your caliber.

I don't know why people would throw hate your way over this. You do bring up a good point about providing for the animals we all hunt. To me it seems like people get too into the thrill of killing something and will do anything to do it (like trespassing and such).
Yes, glass for tracks is a really good start. Also, if the temperatures stay low they will stay in the open longer to get enough feed to stay warm.
