Montana Spot and Stalk Spring Bear

Will be in the Swan Valley end of May myself. Liking this thread already. Last time it was a pm thing but didn't hunt many mornings or mid days. This go round it'll be walking gated roads right at sunrise till about 9am, then hit it again about 4pm till dark.

    CO bear tag worth getting???

Yep that's exactly what I'd do too. If I could kill a deer early on in the hunt, pack it back to town, get a ml bear tag from a DOW office then head back out. Tags are OTC with a set cap that doesn't get met for the ml allotment.

    CO bear tag worth getting???

Going to be muzzleloader deer hunting in sw CO this year provided I draw? Hunted the area for deer and elk in the past with success but never bear nor have I seen much sign in the past. Hunting over a carcass seems like it would be effective so anybody with any experience or knowledge would be...

Number OneTips that you can give me for elk hunting

After all that good advice I'd say during the general rifle hunts which are hunts most of us do or do the most is to stay afield. Can't kill one from camp...well from most camps anyway. Certainly not a hotel room!!!

    Which Bullet for CO Elk

In retrospect the 348(minimum) and 405 FLAT POINT Powerbelts would kill an elk too according to many. No need for any HP or a fancy tip as these are soft lead anyway. I'd caution on higher than 90gr powder charge with these bullets as it'll hinder penetration.

    Which Bullet for CO Elk

I just found out via backdoor we drew ml elk so I guess now I can chime in. I will curse Powerjunk bullets till the day I die and yes I have used them to kill deer so I have experience with them. No Excuses, Thor, Hornady FPB, and I really like the new Federal Premium Lead 350gr. CO even has it...

Hey CO guys and anybody who can help

I've hunted neither of the GMU's mentioned. I hunt sw CO that's why I started thread. I'm leaning towards the H/F but wanted to ask here first.

Hey CO guys and anybody who can help

We've found with CO that success rates are relative. By that we mean you have to consider the source. We kill elk diy backpack hunting every year we hunt 2nd rifle which has considerable low success rates due to number of hunters afield. Well...a lot of those hunters have days they sleep in...

Hey CO guys and anybody who can help

Only OTC season going on is archery elk. Muzzleloader elk, deer, bear, season overlaps but is a draw.

Hey CO guys and anybody who can help

Oct is actually considered a poor time to hunt mule deer by many in the know. Deer in Sept are usually somewhat pattern able and are up high or around timberline. In my experience deer have been lower than elk come the general Oct rifle seasons. Oct isnt hardly even pre rut for elk and those 2nd...

Hey CO guys and anybody who can help

Not needing a giant. 2.5-3.5yr old 4x4 would be fine. Its an early sept hunt and usually by rifle elk season the deer have done a migration down and usually can be found lower than the elk your chasing. Its a generality I've seen as both true and false in my experience.

Hey CO guys and anybody who can help

I'm looking strongly at two different early rifle mule deer hunts which I have enough points to draw already. One is in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness and the other is in the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. I've researched biologist and game wardens in both regions and its like splitting hairs!!! From a...

    Colorado Muzzy Season

I'll be in 751 in the same remote wilderness drainage I've hunted the last 4yrs via archery, 1st and 2nd rifle. Taken a bull every year and never seen another hunter!!! I do my scouting and am a total lightweight camper/hunter who gets off beaten path and have had OTC hunts seem like limited...

    Warm weather meat care ?'s

So a bud and I are planning on cashing in on our accrued elk points and apply for the muzzleloader hunt. All things I see suggest we are a 100% draw with the 3pts we each have. The area we are gonna target is remote portion of a wilderness we can access from a non wilderness nat forest...

    Elk Bullet

180gr Fed Trophy Copper BT out of my 30-06 for my combo mule deer/elk hunt this year. They are best of all worlds...excellent BC for longer shots, almost immediate expansion for takedown yet tough as nails through and through! My Savage 114 loves em also!!!

Black Hills SD mule deer ?'s

Lots of good info...thanks. I have some local knowledge also from all the years turkey hunting that I'll take advantage of so I have areas figured out just need tag

Black Hills SD mule deer ?'s

Kinda get that feeling that people are just intimidated to apply for the tag on the basis of there only being 16 tags available??? I have made a call to the GFP lotteries dept and was told I should be in good shape with 6pts but then I read somebody with 7pts was declined???
  20. M

Black Hills SD mule deer ?'s

I looked on the SD GFP website and although it isn't broken down as well as other states it showed 162 applicants with at least 1pt applied for the 16 available tags. Not horrible odds considering the points I'll have is it? I'll apply for wt only tag if need be but plan on going in '17.
