    Oregon Blacktail Hunters

At the recent Pacific NW Sportmen's Show I was able to a representative of ODFW about the closing date of the General Western Oregon Deer Season. I was encouraged by the conversation because I was told that there is discussion at ODFW about changing some outdated regulations, and the...

    Idaho or Montana

When I worked in Idaho (North Fork area) a couple of years ago there were bears all over. Most were a chocolate brown, nothing special in size, pretty dumb. Wolves also present.

    Cruz on Public Lands

Four years ago I think I must have been the only person to hear Mitt Romney say he was going to get the Govt. out of the land business. What Teddy doesn't realize is that the people already own govt land. How dumb can he be? The states can't handle it and will sell it off to private interests...

    Roosevelt Elk

If you don't like getting wet better stay home in front of the fire. If you don't like hunting brush better stay home in front of the fire. Chances are you'll hear them before seeing them. Or, maybe not. Chances are you'll have them in your lap before you know they are there. Or, maybe not...

    The Jig Dance

I wrote an article published in the December 1983 Outdoor Life about jig fishing for trout (and everything else). Still doing it. A friend caught 29 summer steelhead in three days this summer on a 1/8 oz black maribou jig. Glad someone else has caught on.

    Home For Sale

Still trying to sell my nice furnished home in Moore, Montana, 14 miles west of Lewistown. Check it out while hunting this Fall. Current price is not firm, so make an offer if you like. PM me for details. Listed by Cherie Neudick at Big Spring Realty in Lewistown.

When Elk Aren't Available There Is Always Grouse

Had a ruffed strut in the road in front of me this morning - tail and ruff all fanned out, but the Forest Service doesn't allow guns in their vehicles. My .410 sits in the corner with a cold barrel. Bummed.

    Unique Spike

Shot an old blacktail buck years ago that had broken a pedicle when he was a yearling and never shed the antler or grew a new one. Had a spike that dangled down in front like that.

    September blues

I'm so jealous. Have seen a lot of birds this summer, but the Forest Service won't let me carry my .410 in the truck. Hmmm.

    When is 'old' too old?

I'm 69, my blood pressure is 120/69, 6' 1" and 166 lb (that includes 10 lb of muscle I didn't have in high school. Six days ago I climbed 12632 ft Mt. Adams to fulfill a childhood dream, and kept up with the teenagers doing it for the first time and the experienced older folks who've done it...

    Being prepared

My girlfriend gave me this: Once a man was driving across the plains and picked up a hitch-hiking Native American. The hitch-hiker sat in silence till he noticed a paper bag on the seat between himself and the driver. His curiosity got the best of him and he finally asked, "what's in the bag?"...

You might be "old school" if...

Well, I love to hunt with my .38-55, I have a P-38 in my pocket right now and it gets used all the time, but here's one no one has mentioned - I have a "tatoo" of pencil graphite in the palm of my right hand. Also, paid $75 for my new Wingmaster (and, it's still my only shotgun).

    .243 rifle advice, please

The .243 won't stand up to the benefits of the slightly larger 6.5x55 or .257 Roberts. Have seen good results with the 6.5 125 gr NP in the sporterized Sweedish Mauser I had built for my son (wish I had one too). Very zingy and very accurate. My old go-to rifle was a 700 classic in .257 that...
