    Thoughts on baiting

In parts of Texas there are way too many deer for the habitat. These deer remind me of Pavlov's dog. The spinner goes off, the deer step out. This and high fences are what many think of when Texas hunting is mentioned. However, many parts of the state do not have anywhere near these...

    Lever Action

I started deer hunting with a Marlin 336 in 30-30 and have had several 30-30s since. Right now I have one 30-30 and a 444 Marlin which is a blast to shoot. Have taken many deer, hogs, coyotes, turkey with both. Have killed one axis at 250 yards with the 444. I have several bolt actions that...

    Drag or Pack Out?

Last years buck was half mile from the truck. Gutless and packed out in one trip. My dragging days are over! Tried carts but the part of Texas I hunt WT in makes that as big a pain as dragging. My brother brings his sled for mountain country but we have yet to use it except for firewood.

Game Bags.. When do you use them?

I live and mostly hunt in Texas. Where I hunt you are on foot, would hate to try to drive in there. I feel you will likely have to quarter the game anyway, so I use them all the time. Sure makes the butchering better when you get ready and helps keep my pack cleaner.

    Dirty wildgame.

Although a lifelong Texan ( and I have seen what was described above), I was taught to skin and quarter an antelope as soon as humanly possible. We carry coolers with ice so we can take immediate care of the meat. Also prefer to do my own butchering of all game and waste of good meat angers...

    Remember to Hydrate

Got dehydrated once while hunting bear in Arizona, their season starts early August. Never hurt so bad. Took two hours of contant alternating water and Gatorade recommended by an EMT in camp with us. Cuased my hunt to be over early. I may be in not so great shape, but I hydrate now! Always...

    smoking wild game

I smoke wild game regularly on my offset smoker. I use wood. Main thing is keep the temp low, usually around 200-225. I have good luck with deer roasts, shoulders, Rio Grande Turkey, wild hog. Some venison (whitetails) is so lean that it may need some humidity to keep from drying out or wrap...

    Lever Action for Pronghorn

I too love my lever actions. I often use a 30-30 or my 444 Marlin. Longest kill with the 444 was 275 yards.

    Snow Day In Texas

I live in Wichita Falls, TX and it was nice that there was no one on the road this morning. My grandkids all called to tell me about playing in the snow. The only person in our office today besides me is the mail man. +1 on the buying frenzy here last night. This is Texas, it will change.

Times a cheap piece of equipment saved a hunt, or my hide.

NEVER leave the house without electrical tape and bandana. Punctured my thigh 3/4" from femoral artery field dressing a deer. Doc said later that if I had not bound it tight, I could have been in trouble. That was on a trip hunting with the truck only half mile away, so didn't carry pack...

Who hunts or wants to hunt big game with a handgun?

I do. Deer, hogs, coyotes. Mostly us a New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt. Shoot 250 gr. flat, hard lead. Sometimes I like to take a Uberti in 45 Colt and sneak up on the hogs. That is a blast.

    The camp have to haves

We usually have plenty of stew, taco fixings, etc.. This year my brother cooked roast, carrots and potatoes and froze them. Heated up after thawing during day. Was a treat in camp.
