Posting from a very comfortable borrowed canvas tent in (theoretically) sheep country.
I drew a ewe tag in a unit with a very long season. I scouted once, hunted a few days in September, four in October, and am now back, hoping for better luck finding sheep.
The unit only has a small herd...
For rec.gov river permits, of course... Believe it is midnight mountain time.
Got mine in for San Juan, deso/gray, middle salmon, yampa/gates of lodore.
Apologies for the long-windedness, but I don’t contribute much so gotta share sometime!
My career as a hunter started when my wife and I moved to Southwest CO in the fall of 2019. I had no job, and decided somewhat randomly that I should try to contribute to the household by getting us an elk...

To the fellow willing to take on a mama griz from her blind side, I salute you.
Sunday morning I had a chance at a buck feeding towards private but couldn't get a shot before he crossed the fence. Driving home that night I saw my first mountain lion crossing the road then crouching a hillside. Good luck to see the best local hunter, I think. Monday I set up at first light...
I'm 0/3 on elk tags. To prepare for my second rifle cow tag, I got in the right frame of mind this morning.
Got home about 2, in time to test my first round of (last year's) venison jerky. It's good.
Got to the trailhead around 4, there's a truck, PA plates. Shit. I like this spot, had a...
Last winter I built a meat-hanging shed. Well, it's really a sauna, but why not also a meat-hanging shed? It's detached and insulated, with two operable vents and a gap at the bottom of the door. I made the benches removable and doubled two of the 2x6 ceiling joists.
A few questions for you...
Live in SW CO, and I've always wanted to head down to the Gila to search for Gila trout.
My wife is taking a 5 or 6 day trip out of Albuquerque in late April - I'm contemplating driving her to the airport then heading west to the Gila. Around here, depending on the year, late April can still be...
Skis win, this time.
Didn't have to work until 1 yesterday, fresh snow after a long dry spell had me eschewing lifts in favor of my second time on skis looking for snowshoes.
Found this one stock still at the base of a tree. Twas ugly, as I shot it, but not fatal, had to chase after it to...
Journey started fall of '19, when my wife and I moved from Denver to SW CO for her job (plus, who wouldn't choose the San Juans over the Front Range?). Lacking a job, I decided I should contribute to the household by getting an elk. Having barely even shot a .22 and with zero hunting knowledge...
This is a long shot, but just in case!
Wife, pup, and I are starting our second section of the CO trail tomorrow eve. Current plan is to shuttle them Durango-Leadville, leave them to hike a few miles, drive back to Highway 50 where we'll finish in 10 days, and hitch to Tennessee Pass to catch...
I'm in the market for a thrift store meat hauling pack. What would you look for? An old school frame pack? A big burly backpacking pack? I have a variety of packs, but mostly for going light - I'll hunt with one of my current packs but want something bigger/beefier in case I have bone-in elk...
