    Let’s talk about firewood

Ya, I kind of feel the same. I’ve transitioned to a traditional maul with hickory handle. And hydraulic splitter.

    Let’s talk about firewood

For those splitting by hand, anyone use a monster maul? The red, all steel, triangle shaped head. I grew up with my dad and an uncle using them.

    Snatch blocks

Not for firewood. Thinking of something that could pack easily and pull a truck out.

    Snatch blocks

My dad and I have used snatch blocks for cutting firewood, always with steel cables. Just curious what others use instead of the steel cables. Rope? Synthetic rope? The issue is packing steel cables for long road trips. Kind of a pain.

    Feral horse removal

I just read an NPR article about a roundup in Colorado. It got me wondering about the adoption of these horses. Anyone adopted one? Or know someone who has? Curious if they get trained/put to use, or just a pet.

    Varmints in the garden

I’ve given some thought to a Henry garden gun for squirrels at the bird feeder. Smooth bore 22 for birdshot.

    Canada fishing trip

Thinking about possibly doing a summer road trip to Ontario next year. I see they have public “crown lands”. I’m wondering about the logistics of just bumming around camping and fishing. Anybody have insights/advice?

The big 18 and adult things?

If there’s something you want to do, hunting, traveling, whatever, do it sooner than later. Be financially sensible. YOU DONT NEED ANOTHER PERSON TO COMPLETE YOUR LIFE, so learn to be good with and by yourself.

    Solo Hunting Tips

I just did my first solo trip from Pennsylvania to Montana this past May. It was great. Being solo was way better than I anticipated. Everything posted in this thread is spot on, especially keeping a notebook. I’m still going back to the notes I kept. I used onyx to mark locations along my...

    Replacement for Meindl Alaskan Hunters

I’m interested in this, as I have a pair of meindls I need to replace. I bought them in 2011 from cabelas. My holdup is not being able to try them on before purchasing. What are the quality issues you know/heard about?

    Hunting trips and hunting partners

Until a couple weeks ago, I’d never done a solo hunt out of state. I asked four buddies, and none could go, or wanted to go. In the end, I’m grateful I was solo. Best experience of my life. Will be doing more solo hunts in the future.

    camp pics

Montana this year. With occasional high winds, I was hesitant to have a fire, so the candle came in damn handy.

    Caving

Years ago, I worked peripherally in the coal mine industry. Was in mines a handful of times. That was probably enough caving for me.

    Montana road trip

How do the water rights work? Are they attached to the property? The person? Are these water rights permanent, or do they need to be renewed on a continual basis? Are there financial costs? Obligations for upkeep of ditches/dams, etc...? I really appreciate all the responses, especially...
