Dave, Just think back a couple years when in Idaho and we were each packing two 5 gallon buckets of bear bait uphill. I doubt you have any "hills" like that around your place, so fill two buckets full of sand and drive to a town where there is a high rise building (at least 10 stories). You... -

Question for the 30 cal guys
Your bullet choice/weight should change with the animals hunted. You don't want a light or quick expanding bullet for large game etc. -

If an animal dies where it cannot be seen from above, buzzards won't see it. They find dead animals by sight. How far was the shot with the 300 Win?- Bill Zent

I wish I had been using walking sticks when elk hunting in timber with lots of dead fall and lava rocks. I blame the lava rocks for meeting my head, an excuse for being goofy in the head since. So use those sticks Dave! -

Hold the trigger back when pushing the round into the chamber, and you have it loaded but not cocked. -

I have a Sako and at times have put a round in the chamber without it being cocked for safety, just raise and lower the bolt and it is ready to fire. -

What is the nastiest place where you have found elk
Finding them is not hard when you hunt......Hells Canyon five miles down the Nee Me Poo trail or the thickest dead fall in Idaho's wilderness. But the hard part is the several trips getting the meat out on your back! -

Youth shotgun?
My sons started with a single shot 20 gauge Winchester 37-A with the rare Improved Modified choke. I think it was also called a Youth Gun. With a single shot they had to make every shot count and it made them better shots. It has taken many birds! If you can find one of them you can't go wrong... -
