Guess i should have asked..two tow chains for makeshift tirechains.
Strap in my truck. No chains...Tundra.
Im too chicken to put myself in a situation these days....been there, done that.
Tirechains work better in the mud than any reasonable truck tire. A messy pain to put on and take off but they work.
TruckClaws are also awesome when the going gets really sticky like gumbo. They also work in deep sand.
Practical things for me this year.
Temporary tirechains for when I get stuck. They rachet onto the rim, wasn't to go test them out but now the snow melted 😞
New broad heads cause I lost too many arrows this year 🥺
New shoulder strap for my fhf bino harness
Electric hands warmers
...tires to one with tracks. I’m a builder and the tracked version is much more useful for grading and dirt work. My concern is that I also use it with my snowblower. I have a steep driveway. Would the tracked machine spin out? Would it have as much traction as my wheeled machine with tirechains.
I manage a Bobcat dealer here in Montana, I get this asked all the time.
Tires will always be better (stock vs stock), you can swap tracks if needed. Snow vs ice is different, just today I had to move a trailer with a disabled machine on it into my shop. I used a T770 with multibar tracks to...
Packed snow sucks for a track skiddy. Especially on a slope or if the snow gets a little packed on the driveway first, which i'm guessing you're not exactly flat in montana. They do make a snow track now which you'd have to swap out every season. No, personal experience with those new snow...
...LTX's on his Tundra (and I love the on-road ride and fuel economy of them)...they're absolute shit in mud.
On the other hand, My '16 Tundra 1794 4x4 with a GoFast Camper on back nets me 15.6 MPG average on highway.
But they ain't worth a dime in mud. Bring tirechains...and traction boards.
...to explain to my idiot coworker that you can’t just loosely wrap a tow chain around one rear wheel (not both) of a pickup that’s stuck with a jackknifed trailer and expect it to do anything other than tear the entire rear quarter panel off. He thought it was a genius idea for makeshift tire...
I have this discussion with myself a couple of times a year, more often when it’s approaching tire time, and always come back to the same conclusion as this.
A lift does nothing for clearances where tirechains are involved. The issue is clearance from the sidewall of the tire to suspension components and brake lines. I can chain all four on my truck. mtmuley
...once cry once when it comes to optics.
Regardless, get good solar, good batteries and for Gods sake if you’re taking it up elk hunting, tirechains for all four on the truck and a set for the trailer too. I don’t take mine up elk hunting.
A good camper is a great investment for recreational...
Laclede chains have been fine for me. I find my needed size and part number on their website then look for them on eBay.
Have a peep behind your front tire. There’s like 1/2” clearance between the tire and steering knuckle on Tacomas. You won’t be able to fit chains up there unless you have...
