Small Bullets (.224) and BIG game

Right, I'm with you. You said there are very few people that should use a 22 cal centerfire for big game and I'm just curious what the difference is between using a .243 and say a 22-250, 22 creed, 220 swift or even a 223. I'm not saying they're the best choice for elk but antelope, deer, and...

Small Bullets (.224) and BIG game

I might pack my .223 for bears this spring, it’s short and light and barely noticeable when strapped to a pack. Would be a great rifle to pack around while looking for elk antlers if nothing else. Especially for black bears I think there’s a ton of merit to the small caliber explosive bullets...

Small Bullets (.224) and BIG game

I have two Howa Minis, one 20" 6ARC and a 22" 223AI, love them both. Neither have the dreaded heavy trigger if cycling the bolt fast and both are very accurate. Just finished up fire-forming Lapua brass in the AI with 50gr Barnes VG that shot into .5". Have a load worked up with the 35HH in...

Small Bullets (.224) and BIG game

It's not the cartridge it's the shooter. How many new hunters gather this info and take off with it? My point is not that a small cartridge won't work. Done it. The size of the bullet does not matter if you can put where it needs to be. Magnum or otherwise. mtmuley

building or having a rifle built

For Springfield get 6.5x55 or .35 Whelen. For son, Mauser .358 Win will be a good option.

    Doe Antelope Caliber

Intook mine with a 7mm mag. I took mine with a 7mag. Just stay behind the shoulders. Use a bullet that will stay together so it dose not blow up and destroy everything your food.

Need suggestions on rifle post cervical fusion

I want to encourage you Sir! In October of 2000 I had a neck Fusion, plate/4 screws/cadaver bone. I had an antlerless Mule Deer tag for the Deseret Ranch out here near Evanston WY. I was supposed to go in November but was only able to go later in December. Dr tells me (in front of my wife) I...

    30-06 and the 150

What hunting tons of Huge Black Wild boar taught me about bullets and calibers. For twenty years, two overlapping hunting experiences were mine to have 12 months a year. One was in the Arizona Strip where genuiune mean Russian Wild Boar had escaped into and were creating a reign of...

    Elk Rifle

Like others have posted, its hard to beat a .30-06. I bought my first centerfire rifle when I still lived in Colorado back in 1967, and it was a .30-06. For about 10 years I didn't have any problem keeping my freezer full of deer, elk, and antelope meat. Back then I loaded it with 150 gr...

    Gaps in coverage

Most here I assume are thinking about their next caliber addition to their rifle cabinet, I am definitely in that mode lately as I am regularly thinking about some of my rifles leaving someday soon with 4 growing kids. Two of my kids (16 yr old girl and 12 yr old boy) are already hunting and...

    Centerfire rifles - your path

I often feel like I have too many rifles, but I use them all. I like shooting, and I enjoy being able to select the right tool for any job that I have. Most of what I have is pretty old fashioned. .223 - In an AR, BCM 16” lightweight upper on FN lower .22-250 - my first rifle, a Winchester...

    First youth hunting rifle?

.243 Tikka was my choice, no regrets. If truly deer or antelope only, I'd strongly consider a fast twist .223 for the short to medium range stand setup you describe.

    Doe Antelope Caliber

Hey Folks, I drew a doe antelope tag in Northeast Utah after 6 years of applying. This is my first antelope hunt ever and I am concerned that my 7mm Rem. Mag will be a little too much gun for Doe antelope. Do you agree? What's your thoughts on using a 223 for hunting doe antelope, is that too...

A non typical elk gun thread

My first centerfire rifle was a Herter's .30-06. For over 30 years it put every deer, antelope, and elk that I shot it at in my freezer. My current elk rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Wby. I have 2 more Vanguards in .223 and .308 Win that I plink at the 200 to 430 yard steel gongs at...

    .243 or 6.5 prc

My 11 yo old is about 65 lbs. He shoots lights out with his .223. Tried the 7mm-08 with Hornady custom lite 120 g SST's as he has antelope and deer tags for this year. I think the noise from the 20" barrel is what threw him off. Have a 6.5 Grendel on the way in the Howa mini action.

    Doe Antelope Caliber

My neighbor use a 223 for deer and antelope every year. He pretty much fills his tag with his coyote gun when he is checking cows. He killed his goat at 380yrd a couple of years ago. I worked with a few guys that like using a 223 case necked up to 6mm with a 75gr bullet. I think it's plenty.

    Doe Antelope Caliber

I'd use the 7mm, especially if you'll be shooting farther. My wife shot a doe antelope with a .223 63grain pointed soft point. The shot was quartering away slightly and was 100 yards. No reaction. I handed her my .300wm and she killed it. The .223 had hit it perfectly, mushroomed and went to...
