@TrapperJ,
If you reload, essentially the sky is the limit.
I do load the 100gr Sierra HP Varmint bullet in my 7mm-08AI, 284 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag.
For heavier bullets the standard 1:9-1:9.25 twist will handle all but the heaviest bullets.
The problem with the heavy bullets in the...
Well, now that I'm starting to get into my "Golden" years (it really ought to be metallic years. I have gold in my teeth, stainless steel in my hips and lead in my @$$.) I've been looking at ways to make it easier on me when I'm alone in the woods.
I started using the gutless method but go a...
With @USAF Ret, criteria for possible neck or shoulder issues along with increased recoil sensitivity my poll selection is none of the above.
I'm an avid reloader and enjoy my "obsolete" cartridges.
So for me it would probably be one of my 25 caliber rifles.

How's your shooting from the hip?
If you're caught unawares up close, you might not have enough time to get a proper two hand grip and sighting.
I've been in the circumstance of surprising a bear within 20 yards. Both of us surprised, actually.
Luckily it gave me enough time to get my...
What is a "tight, match grade" barrel?
I know of different manufacturers offering "select match" and other variations thereof.
All match grade means is that the bore is at a consistent tolerance.
Such as air gauging down the length of the barrel to be within 0.0005" for the length.
Not...
@jpc01101,
First off, I think we need to define what "long distance" means to you.
Typically out to 600 yards is medium distance.
1,000-1,500 yards is long distance.
Beyond that is ELR, then ULR.
For punching holes in paper, the 22s do ok. As in having enough energy. You really need to be...
I'll agree with the others that have answered so far.
Terrible!!
Without a shot cup, the rifling will grab the pellets and start them to rotating. But it's not spinning the whole shot column at the same speed.
And it not being a single projectile, it will fling them outwards once it clears...
Oh I wholly agree with you on that!!
So far I only have 2 Ackley Improved cartridges. And honestly one of those isn't even that.
7mm-08AI
Since Ackley never did any work on the 308 family of cartridges they are mostly listed as "Improved, 40°".
The other being my 257 Roberts AI built on a...
For the Mauser action, there are lots of good choices.
The originals 8X57 Mauser, 7X57 Mauser.
There is also a not widely known 6.5X57 Mauser.
Then there's like the necking up to 30X57, and 35X57.
Necking down gives you plenty of great cartridges also.

By "standard length" do you mean a long action?
Aka 30-06 length?
The Mauser might be what is called an intermediate length.
Made for the Mauser's 57mm case length. Verses the 64mm case length of the 30-06.
@sigpros,
As you mentioned, barrels for Mausers are fairly easy to get.

Sounds more like a Hornady SST rather than a Ballistic Tip.
I've been hunting with the NBT for over 40 years now (well over 80 deer) and never had that happen with 4 different calibers. 25 caliber ranging from 250 Savage through 257 WBY, 30-06, 270 Win, 7mm-08 through 7mm WBY.
Ranges from 20...
While your cut aways may display the 120gr having a thicker jacket. The 140gr is still fine for antelope, deer and black bear.
And yeah, I hear every year of people taking elk with them. Along with the 120.
While the NBT are one of my go to bullets for hunting, my other go to is the 140gr...
