Colorado Elk Unit 41,42,411 1st Rifle

I have hunted the Grand Mesa country pretty much every year for the last decade. Usually 3rd rifle cow on a second choice. The last 3 years have been very poor. Prior to then, we would see elk every day and would always have at least 1 of us in camp kill one. There are not as many people in 3rd...

Updated Mystery Ranch Metcalf packs - any users?

I carried the new Metcalf 50 this year. It carriers very comfortably. I packed a rear quarter from a cow with no issues in November and then a rear and a front (boned out) in December with no issues at all. My only complaint is that the pack squeaks pretty badly. The fabric that is sewn around...

    Colorado 2nd vs 3rd Rifle

2025 will start the new season structure (it changes every 5 years) moving 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rifle seasons earlier in the year by several days. This will make it a little harder to find bucks during 2nd season because it is farther away from the rut. 3rd season, especially towards the end should...

    Ruger M77 Mark II 30-338

The stamp on the barrel appears to say 30-338. Pretty sure that is not the same cartridge as 338-06.

Beginner Guide to Reloading - What equipment did you upgrade early on?

The rock chucker press has been the standard all other single stage presses are judged by for a very long time. If the rock chucker kit is still available, that is where I would recommend you start. A digital scale is a nice upgrade but you can get by for a long time with the balance scale...

    Meat hauling capable daypack

I started my boys with a Teton sports scout 3400. It is not fancy and you have to stuff the meat inside the pack, but it can handle all they need for the day and a boned out elk front. And it cost less than $100. My oldest has helped pack 5 elk with his.

    Colorado Unit 30

    Ramshot Big Game Reviews?

Tried it in a 708. Couldn't get it to shoot as good as I wanted, but the powder is great to work with.

    7mm-08

We are using IMR 4064. I tried big game but couldn't get it to group all that well in the rifles I was loading for.

    7mm-08

We have had excellent success with the 140 grain TTSX. My boys have taken 6 elk between them with it.

    Hornady Interlock Bullets?

I have used interlocks in .243, 7mm08, 308, 30-06, and 35 whelen. They have always seemed to be one of the easiest bullets to develop an accurate load with.--R

Actual Weight of Meat - Can we be honest?

This year we had a scale in camp. Here is what we carried off the hill for the cow I killed. Fronts= 31.5 and 27.5 The goodie bag with the tenderloin, backstrap, heart, liver and neck meat =44.5 I think we accidentally weighed the same back quarter twice but I have them down as 48.4 each. After...

    Annual elk rifle thread

Weatherby vanguard wilderness in .308 win shooting 168 grain TTSX. Switched from a 300 win mag last year because I was tired of the recoil and was looking for a lighter rifle.
