Shotgun fitment
I wouldn't buy the lighter/cheaper gun without being certain the shims will get you where you need to go . . . fit is everything in a system without a rear sight. I'm with JLS about asking the gun shop to adjust the fit before making a decision.- Workingonit

Sleeping in truck or tent
Are you planning to hunt in grizzly areas? If so, a topper gives you a LOT more lattitude with respect to food storage. I love mine, and it's nice to have for reasons other than truck camping anyway.- Workingonit

anyone here use 223 on hogs or deer?
I watched a hunting partner kill a decent-sized mulie with a 55 gr. TSX from a .223 a few years ago and was extremely impressed - the bullet passed through completely, both lungs were jelly, and the buck made it about 15 yards before tipping over. Pretty ideal.- Workingonit

US Made Sleeping Bags
+1 on WM. My 20 degree bag is the only one I've ever owned with a truly conservative temperature rating . . . I've slept comfortably in that thing down to zero with long underwear and a beanie. Can't say enough good things.- Workingonit

Bird dog questions
As someone who's spent a lot of time following GSP's around eastern MT, I'd say they're a perfect choice for upland - you really couldn't do much better.
