Can't get Wilderness Soon Enough for Goshawks

I thought you guys might remember that from intro to arbo. It's one of the key factors in the difference between new and old growth forests. Buzz, it has nothing to do with timber cruises and board feet of lumber. "Biomass" is the organic matter in this case a forest. If I can remember...

Can't get Wilderness Soon Enough for Goshawks

I am amazed of the things buzz, eg and it know. I truly feel, I am in the presence of greatness. How often do we get to listen to guys that have seen everything, know everything and have done everyting, on all levels pertaining to the elements of ecology. I have to commend these guys that can...

    Rosie gets married

You guys are some rude son of a guns. Ithaca and Elkgunner swing that way and we should be more sensitive to their feelings. Can you say homo-phobic?

FS to lift poison ban on prairie dogs

There has been a steady increase in PD's since the 1099 has been used. What is used now is zinc phosphide. It's not near as effective, but is much safer. ZP is a contact poison and numerous tests have been done. One I've read stated feeding a coyote 15 PD carcasses that had died from ZP...

FS to lift poison ban on prairie dogs

To answer Colorado Oak's question. It's just like what would happen if you owned a dog and it didn't stay on your property. If your dog goes on to the neighbors and damages their property, your liable. What happens here if a joining landowner won't do anything with their PD's you take a civil...

EG, it doesn't work to control PD's on one side of the fence and not the other. Hence, where the problem lies. Before the hoopla when things had some normality, either the ag. producer, BLM, FS or State land offices would call to do PD control. We would bait the whole town and map both sides...

EG, It is obviously is something your tunnel vision can't comprehend. It's....not....the....PDs....on....FS land....it's....them....moving....on.....to....private....land.

FS to lift poison ban on prairie dogs

It has just changed in recent years, for no PD control on Fed lands. The ag. producers that have the property in question have been there as long as 100 years or at least in the family. I don't know the people in the article. I do know, that the people I work with don't necessarily want to...

FS to lift poison ban on prairie dogs

EG, I don't think you understand. PDs, don't understand birth control or property lines. To put it in an analogy you might understand. Say your neighbor (forest service) has an oil spill and it goes over into your yard and ruins all your grass. Are you upset? Would you like to see something...

FS to lift poison ban on prairie dogs

Hey, this is my area! I believe if you own the land you can do what you need to make a living. I've delt with this all my life and also work with the PD for a living. Many don't seem to understand that PDs are a rodents and they do breed as such. I'm not bragging by anymeans, but I'm sure I...

A wise thought to ponder on.

I was told by a 72 year old man, that is retired from the Fish and Game. Yeah, it's one of the old guys that I coffee with, that some think are so ignorant. He said, "The ultimate goal of any mediation or arbitration is the dis-satifaction of the outcome by all parties involved". I've always...

    Selling furs

Blaine, no I just sold the whole carcass. There is a taxidermist here that has a contract for 5000 jack-a-lopes. They are for the tourist trade, not sure where they all go. But I'm sure many are sold here in the Black Hills. I could have shot more, it was just off one area of the inlaws...

    Selling furs

I sold 119 jackrabbits today. I got $1.50 each for them. The $178 I got, payed for about half the gas I used getting them. But at least I got some return for all the fun I had getting them.
