Hey, @Barn.
I have a kind of complex system that I find really reliable.
I pair a simple Garmin etrex 10 w/ a deLorme InReach -- which has saved my butt!!! -- and my iPhone.
The InReach pairs w/ the iPhone; it can send and receive messages; and it gives me reliable UTM coordinates that I...
I second @mtlion's advice re: high elevation basin's w/ lots of feed, cover, and water. I've bagged a couple elk in an area just like that at 10,000+ feet. Best thing about that area: I only know of one other hunter who goes up there, and there's mutual respect for being willing to go so deep...
That first pic you shared is awesome, @POk3s. Must have taken some balls to whip out the camera when the stakes were so high. See any other hunters out there? How far were you from the truck?
Went out for my *FIRST* archery season this year and took two horses -- it was also my first horse packing trip -- up into Utah's High Uintas Wilderness. I've hunted the same area the past three years. This year, I had to go deep, 14 miles into the backcountry, to find the animals.
After three...
Re: wildfire, federal land management policy, and the future of the American West, I HIGHLY recommend a new New York Times article that paints the picture -- based on the best available science and research -- of a pretty grim future for our forests.

I recently noticed there wasn't a post for episode 5. Of course, it's up on Randy's web site.
The conversation Randy had w/ Outdoor Life editor-in-chief Andrew McKean and Field and stream contributing editor Hel Herring was profoundly and consistently thought provoking. Hell, even my wife...
I understand there may be some conflict of interest here (I'm a public radio journalist), but I'd like to hear a discussion about which of the various conservation groups I should give my money to. Why would/should I support RMEF, TRCP, BHA, or any other groups? What are their missions and what...
This year, I'm trying the Stratospire 1 tent from Tarptent, a Designed- and Made-in-America company out in California.
http://www.tarptent.com/stratospire1.html
It's a trekking pole tent w/ large vestibules on either side of the living space that w/stands strong winds, punishing downpours...
I solo backcountry bivvy hunted in Utah's High Uinta Wilderness a full week last year w/ just a tarp and a bivvy sack. I highly recommend the tarp setup described in the Backcountry College video from Twisted Stave -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b5Effcnq6Y. Worked really well. I used a...
I really enjoyed the conversation, and I learned a lot about hunting.
But I gotta tell you, the best, most valuable, most insightful and wise 10 minutes of this podcast w/ Newberg, Rinella, and Putelis is the last 10.
My wife and I are coming up on our one-year anniversary. I started hunting...
