    Shiras moose caliber

Shiras are not tough animals to kill. Use whatever you're comfortable with and make a clean shot, the moose will die.

    Idaho bighorn sheep hunt prep

I was lucky enough to draw a bighorn tag in Idaho this year. It was quite unexpected, as one of those tags I put in for "just in case". We are very excited about the hunt. Honestly, I don't know much about sheep and so I'm trying to absorb as much as I can. Wondering if people can offer up...

    Idaho Draw Results 2022

I drew a sheep tag. Really caught me off guard, had to triple-check results and I'm still sort of processing it in my mind. SOOOO much to do in a few months. Gear, scouting, fitness... holy cows.

Spotting scope dilemma: 2016 Vortex Razor Model Vs 2018-Newer Vortex Viper

I spent over a month going back and forth looking at spotting scopes and I also chose the Athlon Ares 65 over the Razor. It's really good glass and eye relief in a lighter/smaller package and at a lower cost. I love mine.

    Can’t decide on first pack?!

If you've seen what used quality (Kifaru, Exo, SG, MR) packs sell for, there is not much financial loss if you find out you're not quite as into backpack hunting as you thought and sell it. If you literally cannot afford one of them, then the Kelty and Osprey recommendations are right on track...

    Never hunted elk

Idaho breaks hunt areas up into units, then sells elk tags by zone which are a collection of units. They also have an "A" tag which heavily favors the archery hunter and a "B" tag which heavily favors the rifle hunter with different seasons for each. Some zone/tag combos are over the counter...

    Western transplant

Hi all, I've been reading the forum for a while but only recently decided to start posting here and there. This is one of the more positive hunting forums, so kudos to the members and moderators here for maintaining the right attitude. I've lived in north Idaho for 10 years now, but am...

    Colorado driver kills 47 antelope

My teenage sister was killed when I was about 7 years old because she tried to avoid hitting a deer and flipped the car she was driving. When you wake up in the middle of the night to hear a sheriffs deputy telling your mother that her daughter is dead, you look for takeaways. #1 - Don't make...

What's your elk rifle and cartridge?

For elk, I have a Rem 700 and a Savage Axis II XP hardwood, both in .308. The Rem is a 3rd generation gun from my grandfather & father and I just gave it to my oldest son so it's now 4 generations. It's killed many many elk, deer, moose, and bear. It could probably use a new barrel to tighten...

Best glassing tripod for less than 150$

Budget option... 3WE sells a carbon fiber tripod for $115 on Amazon that looks suspiciously similar to another commonly touted carbon model which sells for a lot more (draw your own Chinese manufacturing facility conclusions). I picked one up out of curiosity and am not disappointed. It comes...

What is the 1 rifle you regretted buying or wished you never had bought?

I bought a S&W AR. Thought I had to have a black gun just... well... because. Shot it a few times and once the novelty wore off I lost interest quickly and it never came out out again. Sold it for a decent loss and put the money toward other gear. I haven't missed it.

    Never hunted elk

Idaho has very different terrain, access, and hunting styles depending on where you go. Up north its steep, dark timber, clear-cuts, and thick brush. You will not have much use for a spotter. Down south, it's open sage and high desert. In the middle there's a mix of deep wilderness with...

Interesting Wolf Related Group in Idaho

I live in north Idaho and most outdoorsmen I know like this program. Despite the frequent sign of wolves when out hunting, they are not easy to lay eyes on nor kill. Trapping takes a lot of equipment, time, and effort. Recently IDFG published that they killed 7 wolves in the Lolo zone, an...
