I wholeheartedly echo the prior comments regarding the roads. Got greedy one year and went after a buck right as the rain started. Got the buck but almost lost my brand new truck driving out -- even with all four tires chained. White-knuckle terror the whole ride out. No steering and no brakes...

    GoHunt vs. OnX

I'm on board with the overall consensus of OnX map superiority and GoHunt research superiority. That said, I will always remain loyal to OnX because (a) they're the first ones "to put mapping on the map" ... and our hand-held devices and (b) they've remained dedicated to improving and expanding...

First Elk Tag Ever - Wyoming Unit 48

As other posters have noted, you will have your work cut out for you, but keep a positive mental attitude and don't be afraid to move around. Use it as a scouting opportunity. If you find the elk, or if you happen to find the deer, it's a place you could probably return to next year if you...

    Reservations Needed?

If you're thinking about Yellowstone and want to stay in the park, you need to start planning now ... and you'll be shocked at the prices for the limited lodging that's still available. Another option is to consider staying outside the park (West Yellowstone, Gardiner, etc. -- Cody's a little...

    Pronghorn Bipod

I'd get the Harris S-25C. As already noted, you want something tall enough to shoot over sage, with a swivel for uneven terrain. My brother learned the hard way the importance of having a taller bipod, and I learned the hard way the importance of having a swivel. The S-25C can still be made...

Non-resident outfitter license (MT) Bill is up for hearing 2/2/2021 (SB 143)

As one of the "unwashed" NR DIY guys, whose thoughts mean little to the Montana Legislature, I'm looking for other ways to be heard. Below is an email I just sent to RMEF. I know they can't jump directly into the fray, but perhaps they can give us NR DIYers another avenue to be heard. A...

    EP 157: 2021 Hunting Policy/Politics with Experts

Just finished listening to this episode. Thought it was fantastic. Randy, Dave and Nephi are correct, you are making a positive difference. Despite what other ass clowns may post on this Forum, your mission and "influence" on promoting public lands and access is vital to its continuation. I...

    Are we Crazy?

I tend to agree with those suggesting the base camp idea, particularly for a mid-Westerner's first trip to the mountains. I did an elk hunt in the Bighorns in mid-October a couple of years ago. Drove through a blizzard to get there, which dumped a ton a snow and limited road access...

And the Hits just keep on coming....WY now.

It's a tough issue, and I appreciate the concerns residents have. But in all of these resident versus non-resident discussions, regardless of state, please don't lose sight of the fact that many non-residents like me try to contribute as best they can to organizations like RMEF, TU, Muley...

Non-resident outfitter license (MT) Bill is up for hearing 2/2/2021 (SB 143)

Catching up on the posts over the past couple of days, as a DIY NR, this is the one that most offends. The issue isn't about creating economic opportunity/certainty for outfitters. They acknowledge they effectively get 39% of the tags every year already. And as pointed out by Randy and...

Non-resident outfitter license (MT) Bill is up for hearing 2/2/2021 (SB 143)

As Big Fin's preference-point post and this post highlight, is it fair to say the issue is not about an outfitter's ability to plan/book any clients for an upcoming season, but the ability to plan/book REPEAT clients every year? I can at least understand the former -- though I still disagree...

Non-resident outfitter license (MT) Bill is up for hearing 2/2/2021 (SB 143)

From a DIY NR perspective, the only persuasive arguments for these legislators will be to show that cutting DIY NR tags will result in less money for the state FWP (fewer applications/preference point purchases/access donations) and its citizens (the small business owners who profit from DIY...

Non-resident outfitter license (MT) Bill is up for hearing 2/2/2021 (SB 143)

Does Montana FWP have a position on this? Regardless of whether or not the total non-resident tag allocation changes, if enough DIY non-residents like me "boycott" Montana and stop buying points for any hunts, won't that ultimately affect their budgets too?

Non-resident outfitter license (MT) Bill is up for hearing 2/2/2021 (SB 143)

Here's an idea: let's come up with a way to provide fewer people with opportunities to enjoy our public land. With fewer people using it, fewer will care about preserving it. Then we can sell it off to the billionaires and developers and nobody will be able to hunt it. A win-win.

The Old Man and I Do Wyoming

Take it from someone who's already had that last big hunt with "the Old Man," you made the right choice. Those memories will last longer and mean more to you than memories of any deer you might have found hunting by yourself.
