    World Cup 2026 starting today

I on the other hand have watched every match so far. I used to watch American "football" games a lot, especially when my sons played. Now I've returned to just watching soccer.

    World Cup 2026 starting today

It should be a great experience going to a game. Someone asked me a few days ago what team I wanted to win. I've been watching world cups since 1970, and the teams I want to win are always the same, Brazil, Argentina, and anyone who is playing England. 😀

Saying goodbye to hard hunting this fall

A 62 year old friend had hip replacement last week of September last year. On November 1st I helped him pack an elk he shot out of the worst place I ever helped with an elk. He had help, but he was down in that really steep hole where you needed hiking poles, and to hold branches etc, just to...

Saying goodbye to hard hunting this fall

I had total knee replacement on the 21st, so I'm at the 2 week point. My big issue so far is that I went 6 days without sleep. Not zero sleep, but about an hour a day, and never felt sleepy. Any issues with sleep?

How old is too old to apply for physical hunts?

I'll be 66 in September. I've always hiked a lot and hunted in areas far off the road. I'm not the same physically as I was at 55, or 45, or 35 etc, but pretty much do the same stuff, maybe a little smarter about the places I go. Up until a month ago, I had no real issues, just sore knees...

    MT- M/S/G results 26

I've spent hours studying the draw statistics, calculating spreadsheets, trying to figure out what my odds might be. My odds for the units that I've applied in are approximately twice what they would be on the squared system, than they are on straight bonus points, and way way higher than if...

Interesting spreadsheet. Thank goodness the number of people applying doesn't increase by 20% per year.

Looks like you are a non resident, so in your case, maybe the squared system of bonus points doesn't change your odds much, but for residents it does. Unlike most things discussed here, math is not a matter of opinion - the squared system rewards those who have been in the game longer...

    MT- M/S/G results 26

I agree that it is the best system. It rewards the people who live in Montana for many years and keep applying. The fact that it's squared definitely helps the odds for those with the most points. It would help my odds by doing many things like making the upfront cost higher, making it that...

    MT- M/S/G results 26

I don't think the money up front thing would make much difference today. The cost of a moose license in 1990 was $50, which is the equivalent of slightly over $125 today so upfronting $125 per license should have about the same effect as the $50 did in 1990. The number of moose licenses...

That is a big part of the problem. In 1990 they gave out 55 moose licenses in unit 323, this year it's 10.

I calculated my odds of drawing the moose license I applied for this year to be about 1:10, without a point system about 1:100, back in 1993 (which I still have the regulations for) about 1:30. Other units will be different some of course. I'm glad of the points system even I haven't drawn...

I have maximum points and I calculate that my odds are much better than they used to be. Odds of drawing moose, sheep, goat were pretty bad before the points system. I'm not drawing anything still, but odds are better.

No Moose, no Sheep, no Goat. Been applying since 1985. Actually, for once, I'm not that bothered as I have knee replacement surgery coming up soon. Was wondering how it would turn out if I actually drew something, or multiple licenses - I now don't need to worry. One of my son's has already...

My First Elk Story to my Next Elk Story (Fly In?)

My first elk story. It was 1988 and I was living in married student housing at the University of Montana. I hadn't grown up where there wasn't any hunting and had only taken up hunting a few years before this. I was working full time in the evenings and going to graduate school during the...
