Hey MTPharmHunter! I was hoping to hear about your experience in HD 291? I drew the tag this year and have been focusing on the BLM on the North end but turning up very few deer. Did you focus on BMA's. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Hey wtefwlhunter! I saw that you were able to hunt HD 291 of Mule Deer. What was your experience like in the unit, do you focus on BMA's or public land? With no forest service in the unit and the BLM being a Wilderness study area it limits public land access a bit. I see there are (2) Type 2...
Another suggestion for trying a mono/copper bullet. I shot 140gr Barnes TSX for years, just switched over to 129gr Barnes LRX to get some more speed and flatten out a bit. Very pleased with the load development of the 129gr LRX with Hunter! also tried 4831 as it has always produced in the past...
I agree it sounds like more than a lubricant issue, but (2) that i'm very fond of are Ballistol, and Frog Lube. I use Ballistol on everything as it is a CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant). It;s very mild and the more you use it the better functionality I have found from it. For shot guns...
Just a few suggestions on your first built; stay with a combat trigger, it is good to understand the basics of installing and function, there are some great combat trigger upgrades without breaking the bank on single stage triggers. Look at the ALG ACT trigger, exceptional basic and crisp combat...
I'm a big fan of the 175 gr Barnes LRX, hand loading the 175's under 73.5 gr Re 22 and get great velocity and even better groups! I switched from the 180 gr Berger Hybrid's, the Berger's fly great but i think are too frangible, i like the weight retention of the Barnes much better when chasing Elk!
Not one of your listed options but I think something worth looking into are the Vortex Viper's. The 2018 Viper HD's run around $500, and offer great glass for the price!
Looks like the elk hunting gods finally took mercy on me and I found a 2020 Elk Permit in the Successful tab! 621-20!!! Can't wait to explore the breaks with a tag in my pocket!
I've hand loaded the spectrum of 44 bullets and i still enjoy shooting 180gr and 200 gr cast and jacketed bullets for plinking (7-8 grs of Power Pistol or Unique). But i would agree the 44 mag comes into it's prime for hunting loaded with the 240 gr bullets. I've loaded the classic Keith style...
Another big Fan of Hornady One shot for lubing cases! Much easier and cleaner to use than the RCBS lube and roller pad. I stagger my loading block full of cases and go spray them out on the deck and then wait 5-10 mins then start re-sizing. It has eliminated the overlubing and denting shoulder...
I haven't had any issues with copper bullet blood trails, like Mthuntr mentioned most hit the ground within a few steps. The farthest I've had trail (25yds) has a Mule Deer buck I double lunged and there was a very substantial blood trail to follow. One could argue for better blood trails when...
I agree the Ruger American in 6.5 Creed not only fits the bill but also allows for a wide variety of ammo options if you are not hand loading. Practice with a rifle is far more important than the caliber selection and with the availability of 6.5 ammo options out there you can practice...
I've taken Antelope with my; 243, 270 and 300 WM, all did the job just fine, while the 300 WM is not necessarily my first choice for chasing goats i think it will do just fine if you stick to aiming at the ribs and taking lung shots, it should be a carpet puller for you!
I've shot both quite a bit with varying results. I think that traditional lead core bullets can preform well if you have the right conditions (moderate velocities and reasonable distances). If you shoot a high velocity round at close distance with traditional lead core bullets you are going to...
