That heat shield is an option, one I am likely going to try first. The kicker is that it will keep more heat inside the pipe to the muffler. The muffler is already not liking the amount of heat I’m putting in it. I may find that I start distorting it on a longer pull.

I was in the same situation and sold mine, I absolutely regret it. It’s one of those things that you don’t need until you do and it’s way too expensive to buy again for the little use it gets. I would save this and use it on a rainy day.
