I’ve been wanting to go check it out since moving to East TX two years ago, just haven’t got around to it until today. I have my own place to hunt but it’s 4.5 hours away but the Crockett is only 1.5 from my house to the northern most part and the wilderness area.
Sadly much of it was closed either due to covid or flooding. I also made the mistake of not downloading my OnX before going and I had no service at all down there. It’s very checkerboard so I was basically just driving through and checking out some of the campgrounds and a burn. Never did get into the wilderness area since the roads weren’t marked very well.
Some big deer come out of there every year so I’m going to continue exploring and scouting and try to hunt it some this season since it’s closer to home and a baby due in October.
Its still nothing like out west but it is public land and a new challenge.

not the worst FS road I’ve been on but my wife was worried about getting stuck a few times, especially when the water went up past our tires.

there’s not much glassing out here. Still hunting or maybe a tree stand over a trail is the best option.

If any other huntalkers hunt the Crockett and want to team up this year let me know.
